Closing the Gap: Joepy Jean Libo-on Shatters Tech’s Gender Barrier

Have you ever wondered how fascinating it is to witness shifting tides in traditionally male-dominated fields? According to the 2023 Global Gender Gap Index, the tech industry’s female population has surged by 32%. If you need proof of why that’s a good thing, look no further than Joepy Jean Libo-on, who’s essentially one of the queens ruling that number.

Libo-on is the marketing head and the woman behind HONOR Philippines’ humming circuits and flashing screens. She crafts campaigns that speak directly and orchestrates engagement strategies that bridge the gap between gadgets and consumers, ensuring that each product resonates authentically. Her approach blends strategic insight and genuine connection, proving that a touch of softness from a woman’s gentle hand is needed in a tech-driven world.

“What truly sparked my passion for tech marketing is the opportunity to connect people with complex technology,” says Libo-on when asked about what inspires her to be one of the women in the field. “From my very first product launch to where I am today, that drive to bridge the gap between tech and people in meaningful ways has only grown stronger.”

The struggle, of course, is making tech sound less like a lecture on quantum physics and more like a good tsismis session. Many people struggle to quickly absorb technology like a sponge and find a balance in keeping up with it.

Instead of focusing too much on technical specs, I always make sure that our messaging uses language that speaks to the Filipino heart,” says Libo-on. Whether the material is for ‘social media, event activations, news features, influencer partnerships, or ads,’ Libo-on finds herself responsible for making it digestible for the average consumer, and with HONOR, she leads.

Women should not feel bound to be in “comfort zone” jobs. This is precisely what Libo-on did. She crushed barriers down, and women like her can build a community in the workplace where support systems are strong, shared experiences are valued, and collective success is the goal.

“Women bring a unique strength to the table — we’re natural communicators and are capable of simplifying complex ideas and making them relatable to the public,” she says.  “Our intuition and ability to spot problems have become my edge to be ahead of competition.”

With the statistics growing for women in tech, this is a significant leap in history. Knowing more women like Libo-on allows younger women to delve into the tech world.

Libo-on then offers a message for young women aspiring to enter the tech industry.

“To all the young women in the Philippines dreaming of a place in tech — there’s space for you, and your voice is needed,” shares Libo-on. “And remember, men and women aren’t competitors but partners in progress. Your impact goes beyond appearance, too — your voice holds power. Even with the grace of a Disney Princess, speak with the confidence of a Lion King.”  Because in the end, in the land of gadgets and gigabytes, it’s the human connection that truly matters.

Well, let me tell you one more thing: Women in tech is not BS; it’s real. Libo-on’s existence in a male-dominated field is a testament that a woman is not there to fill in the quotas; she redefines the industry to bring a unique perspective, a powerful yet soft presence, and a relentless drive to succeed. She owns her space, and in doing so, she creates space for others.
