Because of the triggering nature of the 13 Reasons Why, this article contains themes and topics that might be traumatizing. So, trigger warning: suicide, rape, and other mental health issues.
13 reasons why you shouldn’t watch Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why”
13 Reasons Why revolves around its main event is suicide… as if it’s something to look forward to
The show is specially written to build up Hannah Baker and her death by taking her own life. The show’s structure makes it seem as if her suicide is the main event of her life. However, this act shouldn’t be viewed as exciting. It’s just wrong.
Explicit and not in a spicy kind of way
They explicitly show graphic scenes like rape and suicide. Although for some it would be necessary to show these scenes as it happens a lot, it was shown in a way as if it was something exceptional. It could be implied or strategically cut. However, we sat through these appalling scenes.
No representation of hope
13 Reasons Why has an overall theme that is somber. It does not show any other way for mentally ill people other than just suicide. For something so heavy-themed like this show, the underlying mood should’ve been hopeful.
It only hovers on mental health awareness
The cause of Hannah’s suicide was bullying, as represented in 13 Reasons Why. It only discussed the tip of the iceberg when it comes to talking about mental health issues. Not at all helpful or informative the show is just a downer.
Pointing fingers
When someone takes their own life, pointing fingers is not the most rational idea. But as depicted on 13 Reasons Why, the ones who received the tapes, with the exception of Clay are responsible for Hannah’s death.
You either kill yourself or cut yourself, take your pick…
Skye mentioned in an episode “This is what you do instead of killing yourself.” When she was asked about her self-harm scars. It’s like the show saying that there is an alternative to suicide. Not hope doe, ✨self-harm ✨
Experts say it’s a red flag
Experts suggest that suicide is more common today because of how actively the media creates content about it. And, since it is the second leading cause of death among teens and middle-aged people, that fact is alarming, and something must be done about it.
Glamorizing suicide
Ever heard about the sad girl ✨aesthetic✨ yeah, its foundation is often solely about being sad, mentally ill, and borderline suicidal. 13 Reasons Why is to blame, among other triggering media. They made it seem like suicide is edgy and poetic.
Improper representation of loss
The way the show represented Hannah’s presence made it seem like she didn’t commit suicide at all. It does not capture the empty feeling of grief one feels when they lost someone they love to suicide.
Sexual assault
It has to be said twice. Were the suicide and explicit rape scenes really necessary? They even made these repulsing real-life crimes look hot and appealing. It’s sick.
It can be better
The way it is generally structured is poor. Story-telling is draggy. They really tried to stretch out the short plot and it shows.
It’s triggering
13 Reasons Why does not talk about mental health awareness, it made it look shallow like bullying is its only cause. It only shows all things negative and dramatic about something that can be scientific.
2 days, 13 hours, and 34 minutes… and for what?
All we got is an askew view about suicide and mentally-ill people. Watching this show is totally not worth your time. That’s more than 2 days of my life that I’ll never get back, don’t make the same mistake and just watch other substantial shows.
