Your Soul Will Thank You for Visiting Bicol, and Here’s Why

When people think of sili ice cream, Bicol automatically comes to mind. But what if this region offers more than its spicy kick? Beyond the fiery sili, Bicol also has majestic mountains, crystal-clear waters, and a diverse array of food hubs that will excite your taste buds.

The Bicol region is nestled in the southeastern part of Luzon, known for its diverse culture and people. The majestic Mayon volcano, the “major major” Venus Raj, the spicy and creamy Bicol Express, and, of course, our queen, the Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray. But beneath these well-known layers, the heart of Bicol beats on; it is also longing for curious souls to feel its pulse and explore every one of its beautiful, uncovered parts.

So pack your things, and let the adven-tour begin with love, Bicol.

Catanduanes: Get Happy on the Island!

Our Bicolandia trip will start at the fondly known place as the “Happy Island.”

It’s just a hop, skip, and a short ferry ride away from the mainland, and you’ll find Catanduanes. It’s a 4-hour ferry ride, actually. Trust me, the waves will not just be waves; you will miss them on the way home.

Catanduanes lives up to the title it gained with its infectious warmth and wonderfully laid-back vibe. The moment you step onto the island, you’ll find yourself continuously in awe of how beautifully soul-captivating the place is. The nauseous feeling you experience during the ferry ride will suddenly disappear like bubbles.

Mother Nature truly outdoes herself, especially at Binurong Point. Time runs slow here while you’re on a dramatic cliffside, where the view meets the wild expanse of the Pacific, with grassy rolling hills that feel straight out of a painting. It’s a breathtaking spot for hiking, photography, or just soaking in the raw, majestic beauty of the ocean.

But the magic doesn’t stop there! Catanduanes is also home to world-class surfing breaks, hidden waterfalls, and an authentic island experience that feels a million miles away from all your worries.

That’s also why many couples and even solo travelers visit here. Simply, they wanted to live slowly for a while. And if you’re one of those who feels like you want to lose track of time, Binurong Point is ‘that’ perfect place.

Have you ever dreamed of camping with your friends? Sharing stories while everybody is gathered around the campfire? Well, Panganiran Mountain Ranges in Pioduran, Albay, will fulfill that camping dream.

The Panganiran Mountain Ranges offer an elevated perspective of Bicol’s stunning landscapes. You can expect a serene retreat amidst rolling hills, with panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. While you’re here, you can camp under the stars, trek through lush trails, or simply soak in the tranquility.

If you view hiking as something challenging yet find camping interesting, the trek will likely change your perspective on both. Your “need” to touch some grass here is guaranteed! The captivating photos will never suffice to describe the beauty of the scenery when you’re up there, witnessing everything with your naked eyes. So, if you choose to pass on this one, you will never truly experience the soul-fulfilling nature of this trip.

Donsol: The Home of Gentle Giants

Have you ever wondered if whale sharks are indeed the size of a bus? I think it’s time to feed your curiosity with answers by booking that whale shark interaction activity in Donsol.

Suppose you are one of those people who constantly advocate for ecotourism and prefer genuine interactions with wildlife. Here in Donsol, the interactions are regulated and respectful. They allow you to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat without compromising their welfare.

No touching, just admiring, yet it will be a humbling and unforgettable experience that connects you deeply with the ocean’s wonders.

Legazpi: Mainland’s Eye-conic Haven

No visit to Bicol is complete without first exploring the place where the airplane landed, Legazpi City (well, that is, if you booked your flight to Bicol International Airport). With its iconic Mayon Volcano, I’m fairly certain you wouldn’t want to let your Bicolandia tour go to waste by not actually seeing it.

If you want to see Mayon productively, you can head to Sawangan Park. It can surely hit your soft spot. A place where you can enjoy the cold breeze, food you crave, and a relaxing view you just need for a loud city break.

A soulful Bicolandia trip shouldn’t end with just eyes that have drunk their fill.

528 Ilawod Cafe, located in Daraga, Albay. Well, getting there won’t be a problem. After all, the address, ‘528 Ilawod,’ is quite cleverly baked right into the cafe’s name.

People find it their local favorite, celebrated for its delectable pastries that melt in the mouth, aromatic coffee that awakens the senses, and comforting meals that hit just the right spot. By the moment you step foot at their door, you’ll be greeted by an inviting interior–filled with wall art that tells. Oftentimes, it is filled with the soft murmur of conversations and the scent of freshly brewed coffee. It’s the perfect sanctuary to unwind after a day of exploration. You’ll want to linger here, savoring every moment and every bite.

I can personally recommend their garlic parmesan-flavored chicken in their SM Legazpi City branch, paired with their garlic fried rice, and I swear by their garlic fried rice as well. Ending your Bicolandia adventure in this cafe will be more meaningful with you, the people, and your ordered drink.

Bicol is a region that fulfills, not just promises. Adventure, disaster, fun, cuisines, culture, you name it. But more than just satisfying your wanderlust, it is here in Bicol where you can truly feed that part of your soul that craves a deeper connection—a connection with the raw beauty of nature, the warmth of its people, and perhaps, even a rediscovery within yourself.

So go on, treat this as your sign, and end it with love for Bicol.
