VP/Tech | OPPO Reno12 F 5G: First Impressions
To make tapping into AI more accessible for their consumers, OPPO released a completely redesigned version of the Reno Series. Keeping the AI Portrait expert brand from the previously launched Reno12 series, the OPPO Reno12 F 5G comes as the ultimate model for an entry-level AI Phone.
You could view the Reno12 F 5G as the little brother to the Reno12 series. But can the freshest addition to this lineup keep up with its older siblings? In this edition of VP/Tech, we’ll be forming our first impressions of the OPPO Reno12 F 5G.
Design
The Reno12 F 5G comes in two stylish colors: Amber Orange and Olive Green. Inspired by the 2024 Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz, OPPO proudly incorporates style with tech. Personally, the ‘flickering flames’ texture at the back of the Amber Orange variant gives it that extra pizzazz I’m looking for. Meanwhile, the Olive Green Variant has a curved light column texture on the back that gives off a three-dimensional appeal to the look of the phone.
Now let’s talk about design and aesthetics. You’ll first notice the large circular camera set up at the back of the phone. OPPO calls this the Cosmos Ring Design, a complete redesign of the camera setup found in the Reno12 series. Taking inspiration from classic wristwatches, it gives off a layered look that exudes brilliance and strength.
Circling the Cosmos Ring design is the Halo Light feature of the phone. Aside from being visually amusing, this light can serve many functions such as perfectly syncing to the music you’re listening to. Additionally, this light could also be customized for certain features like charging, notifications, calls, and even gaming.
Build
Not only is it stylish, but the Reno12 F 5G also prioritizes comfort in its design. As for comfort, the phone seemed lightweight at 187g. Being 7.69mm thick, the phone does not require much energy for gripping and maintains a sleek look overall.
The phone’s durability also seems promising given the brand’s claim of adding a brand-new All-Round Armour structure. The brand says they used an advanced glass screen alongside an independently developed High-Strength Alloy Framework to shield the phone. There’s also a Sponge Bionic cushioning design to protect the phone from accidental drops and impact.
Furthermore, it has an IP64 rating for water and dust resistance. This means you get an extra layer of protection against outside forces that could harm the phone.
Camera
Of course, the star here is the Reno12 F 5G cameras. The phone boasts a 50MP main camera + 2MP macro camera, a 112-degree 8MP Ultra-Wide Camera, and a 32MP selfie camera in the front.
Being a portrait expert, the brand claims flagship-level quality through its Pro Portrait Mode. We added a few sample shots below just from our initial testing of the phone. As you can see, photos taken using the Reno12 F 5G look promising. It is capable of taking vibrant photos with decent detail and authentic tones.
