After four years of hiatus, JL returns to the spotlight. Four years ago, John Lloyd Cruz made a big decision to take an indefinite hiatus. Though he claims that he never left because he continued to make movies throughout that time.
John Lloyd never truly left the camera
In a podcast of Karen Davila, she asked John Lloyd what he feels when people say “Bumalik na si JL!” The award-winning actor, then, recalled that someone said that he returned to showbiz. He realized that he stay away from showbiz but not really in cinema.
“Merong isa na nagsabi, dinagdagan niya ng ‘bumalik na sa showbiz.’ ‘Yun medyo, oo nga naman. Bumalik ako sa showbiz pero hindi ako umalis sa paggawa ng sine. Hindi ako umalis sa harap ng camera. Kasi kahit naman tumigil ako noon with my usual work in showbiz, in films and TV, nagtuloy pa rin naman ako but much, much smaller production.”

John Lloyd chooses another direction in his career
The showbiz industry has become saturated with new artists. Additionally, the industry is always subject to change. You may need to adjust to a change that isn’t entirely true to yourself at times. For John Lloyd, he made a step back when he realized that the industry changed him and he felt lost.
“Medyo crowded doon sa isang daan. Sa trabaho namin, napaka-vital nung ‘teka lang,’ are you making the right decisions? Are you making the right choices? Are you behaving the way you want to? Kasi talagang binabago tayo ng industriya in many ways na pwede mong ma-imagine. Akala mo you had it all figured out pero biglang may mangyayari sa ‘yo and you realize na, ‘Hindi na ako iyon ah.’ And then you take a step back. ‘Yung pag-step back ko, medyo lumayo lang.”
According to John Lloyd, he got tired of fighting for the content that he wants to see on more commercial platforms. He also said that he felt like he was evolving and it was too complex for him to understand.
“But ang totoo is I was evolving I guess and it was too complex for me to understand or comprehend. Calling it burnout would somehow, I would feel parang nare-reduce into that. Kasi it was a combination of so many issues. Maraming questions, maraming mga discontinued dialogue with certain creators, with ‘yung mga nakaupo sa company. I guess hindi lang ‘yun napag-uusapan. Hindi lang siya nakikita as an angle.”
John Lloyd reconnected with nature on his soul searching
When John Lloyd parted ways with ABS-CBN, he wanted to reconnect with nature. He lived in El Nido Palawan for a while. He had the impression that nature somehow started healing him. John Lloyd also feels the love of the locals. They embraced and understood him. He also revealed that he walks barefoot on the island.
Being a father is the most fascinating thing in John Lloyd’s life right now
Cruz has a child with Ellen Adarna named Elias Modesto. They currently have a co-parenting setup. The 38-year-old actor said that being a father seems like you are ready. He went on to say that it took him a while to accept that he feels like he wanted it, he feels like he already planned things out. But he never got scared of the responsibilities at all. On how he feels about his son, he shared that it’s the most fascinating thing for him right now.
