Does taking L’s as an adult make it much easier?

L’s, or another term for the word loss, is a term that’s being used by the younger generation in reference to a bad moment or taking a loss in any situation.

As a college student having to face my own share of losses, it doesn’t make experiencing the next one any easier. Rejected outputs, shunned opinions, bad project results, it’s always one after the other. Back when I was a kid it was very apparent that taking L’s are severely disappointing.

Expressions such as crying, wailing, and complaining seems like the most normal thing to do, but as I grew up, these expressions felt more like a luxury in relation to the responsibilities I need to accomplish more than anything. It feels like being productive is much more worth my time than whining about a recent let down I’ve just experienced.

Although we cannot control how we feel about losing, we most definitely can control our actions about it.

Assess yourself

Taking L's

Acknowledge and validate your feelings but also accommodate where you can improve for next time. Accepting disappointments should always be a good mix between making sure that you don’t repress yourself and making sure those emotions feel seen, but also looking and understanding the standpoint of why things went left. Losing is a very grounding moment for a person, so make sure to take your time with it and process your emotions well.

Learn from it

Taking L's

Adapt and learn from the situation. You can ask yourself what are the things you should change, and what are good things that you take away from it, so that you can avoid making the same mistake again. It’s truly a process to get back from a loss, but strive at your own pace. Reflect on your actions and come back even better next time.

Your Support System

Your support system matters. Family, friends, and your loved ones can be your core support during these times. Having people that listen to you is extremely helpful, as you would always know that you’re not alone and there are people who will always love and support you. Let them talk about honest critiques and help you realize what you might’ve done wrong, and communicate how you’ve feeling from the situation to them.

Taking L’s will always be different for all of us, but as we grow and get accustomed to our environment, we learn how to stand up and learn from them as there is only one way and that is forward.
