Colder than the December breeze: Wil Dasovich on ‘how it ended’
The entertainment industry was never my cup of tea. I never really had much interest in celebrities or their lives. But somehow, I know bits of what happens (or at least what’s seen online or on TV), when it happens – and Wil Dasovich‘s story was no exception.
I knew when Wil had cancer and his then-girlfriend, Alodia Gosiengfiao, stuck with him through the process. I knew when they separated last month. And somehow, I knew about his recent vlog trending.
Letter from Nepal
Wil Dasovich recently braved the Himalayas with a group of vloggers from around the world to attempt to conquer the ever-grandiose Mount Everest. This was to take part in the World Vlog Challenge, and boy, was it a visual delight!
There’s no doubt this two-part vlog series of him was a visual treat. I mean, of course, it’s the Everest, that should be enough. But more than this, the way Wil captured the right visual for the story he’s trying to tell struck right at home. And his words, his story – it was enough to make you well… feel.
At first, I wasn’t entirely certain why netizens claimed Wil’s second vlog, ‘How it ended’, as what they claim it to be – a ‘secret‘ love letter to his beloved. But then, I watched it. I listened to it carefully and heard that underneath the metaphors sewn together, a parallel story was told.
How it Ended
I find it somehow difficult to put Wil’s vlog content into my own words. I don’t want to make it sound so romanticized, after all, Wil didn’t state anything about the Letter from Nepal series relating to Alodia and his relationship directly. But at the same time, I don’t think I’d do justice to the beauty he breathed into his words.
Although the parallelism Wil assumingly wants us to notice cannot be mistaken – ‘how it ended’ was his farewell.
I guess after you made someone a big part of your life, they rub off on you. They become a routine that you’re so used to, something seems missing when they’re missed. They become a part of you, and it makes it hard to lose them. You see them do something so often that you see that something as them.
I know. Love can be crazy at times, and in Wil Dasovich’s case, it might just as well be comparable to climbing the Everest.
Just like what he said, the climb, one’s relationship, won’t always be easy. It’s exciting and fun, and it always makes you giddy that you can’t wait until the next time you’ll see them. But love, like all other aspects of life, is something you should work hard for.
And sometimes, how painful it may be to accept after all the efforts thrown: love can also be something so fleeting.
The Takeaway
Maybe that’s what’s so melancholic on ‘How it Ended’.
It shows us how beautiful Mount Everest is, and it prepares us, it builds the anticipation of reaching the summit – of witnessing it even through the screen. But then, there was no summit. After looking forward to it, all we’re left of is goodbye.
Wil’s journey to the summit was something we’re all rooting for. After all, we wanted to see the relief on his face after exerting all his mental and physical energy on this. But a person can only go so far. A heart can only love so much.
We’re here though. Wil is here, despite the pain, despite not making it to the summit. And he couldn’t be any happier to have tried nonetheless.
The journey, whatever it may be, is really something we learn from. It is what we grow from. So no matter how many times we fail to reach the summit, I guess what’s really important was to have enjoyed the journey. To have met people that have become an important part of your life.
We’re still here, and our Everest awaits no matter how long we take.
To Alodia (maybe)
