The mouthwatering Lechon Festival in La Loma
The district of La Loma in Quezon City has been the home of some of the best lechon in the Philippines. Every year, the third Sunday of May has been a huge celebration for its residents as they prepare to celebrate the greasy yet very flavorful day, the Lechon Festival.
La Loma is part of the first district of Quezon City. If ever you want some good piece of lechon, either for a big occasion or you simply wanted a bite of the crispy and juicy lechon, there’s no other place to look out aside from La Loma.
The Lechon Festival in La Loma is not like any other festival. Other festivals may involve pageants, concerts, or religious and cultural rituals. Here, the Lechon is indeed the star of the day.
It features Lechoneros participating in the parade by dressing their lechons in different costumes. They also place them on floats for everyone to see. After the Lechon parade, Lechon owners give out free lechon and other pork dishes. Tourists and residents take part in the boodle fight.
The first-ever Lechon Festival happened in 2000 when the former president of the La Loma Lechoneros Association (LLA) and owner of Monchie’s Lechon, Monchie Ferreros launched the “Parada ng mga Lechon.”
In support of the district’s lechon industry, former Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. declared La Loma as the Lechon Capital of the Philippines due to a huge number of establishments selling Lechon in the area.
It is a well-known fact that La Loma houses some of the best and most famous places to get lechon in the Philippines. Although, the options on where to buy can be pretty overwhelming. But the pioneers in the industry will never fail you and your tastebuds if ever you’re on a look out for the best lechon.
Along Calavite Street, you will find one of the first in the industry, the Mila’s Lechon. Mila’s Lechon has been serving their good old tasty lechon since 1973. Aside from their classic Pork Lechon, they now also have Beef Lechon and can also provide catering services for your party needs.
You also have the Ping-Ping’s Lechon, another veteran in the lechon industry. Aside from their juicy lechon, Ping Ping is also known for making their own sarsa or lechon sauce made with liver, which serves as a great dipping for the lechon.
Monchie’s Lechon around Retiro Street is also considered one of the best lechon chains in La Loma. Some even say that they have the most flavorful in the area as they use a mixture of water, soy sauce, and honey to coat the skin of the pig.
Whenever we talk about lechon, it is impossible to not mention La Loma in Quezon City. It has always been the first place that comes to our minds. Surely, you can argue that some provinces in the Philippines may have better and tastier lechon, but you cannot beat history. If you want the classic and the authentic taste of Lechon, La Loma is the right and only place to be.
