If change is good, why do we reject it?

They always say that change is good but the frequent reaction of others towards it is not all that welcoming. Why is it that every time something new lodges itself in our day-to-day life, we still try to oppose its existence? Change is good but why do we seek out its negative effects on us and our environment? If it’s so good, why do we reject it?

Routine disrupted

There are those who don’t mind having nothing planned. If they wake up today, they’ll just follow whatever life has in store for them and make the decisions as they go. But there are those to whom routines are important. Routines make their day because it can lessen chances of hassle. There’s a structure that they can lean on. There is also less anxiety or stress because you have something to follow. You don’t have to make decisions on a whim.

When change comes, it can disrupt one’s routine. They’re held back from doing an important task or maybe they have to rearrange their entire schedule. When this happens, it usually brings agitation. It can put them under stress because there is no knowing if the change is permanent. Would they have to start adjusting? How long will they have to get used to it before it becomes another part of their routine?

Change in control

When change happens, our control is also affected. Sometimes, it is lost. Other times, it is shared. You are the one who usually has the hands on the wheel. What happens if the wheel is taken? What if someone else has to take charge for a while? The wheel might not even be there anymore. You might worry about what you will do next.

If there is this one change, surely more will follow.

Sudden change, no preparation

We also reject change because we are not prepared for it. We are expected to immediately adjust or adapt to it. The problem is that it takes time. Of course, in environments such as work or school, the news has to be received as professionally as one can. However, we cannot deny that internally, we are bothered.

If there is uncertainty and we are not fully equipped for it, it’s natural that the initial reaction is negative. Sudden happenings catch us off guard. It confuses us and can push us out of our comfort zone. In some cases, it invades. We are not prepared for that.

The human in us

We always hear that change is the only constant thing in this world. Every time that it happens, it is met with two major reactions. It’s either accept or reject. Even if they insist that the change will be good, there are those who will still oppose it. As mentioned before, it’s natural.

However, it’s not always and forever that we will reject and the same goes for accepting too. After all, it is the human in us.
