Some women are remembered for the crowns they wear. Emma Mary Tiglao hopes to be remembered for something far more lasting. As she reflects on her journey from representing the Philippines on the world stage to the lessons passed down by the women who raised her, Emma reveals the threads that have shaped her identity: family, purpose, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to represent the Filipina with authenticity to the world.
The Weight of the Flag
Emma is no stranger to carrying the hopes of a nation. Her journey in pageantry spans more than a decade, but returning to the global stage required a renewed sense of purpose.
“Actually, this is my second time representing the Philippines,” she shares. “The first time I represented the Philippines was in 2019 during Miss Intercontinental. And during that time, do’n ko na-feel na ang sarap ipaglaban ng Pilipinas.”
Six years later, stepping out for Miss Grand International, the stakes felt distinctly different for the country. “Na-feel natin na ang daming nangyayari sa Pinas, ‘di ba? Sad news, bad news.”
In the midst of national challenges, Emma realized her role extended far beyond competing for a title. She holds onto a specific message from a supporter that shifted her perspective entirely.
“Sabi niya: ‘Seeing you holding that Philippine flag on stage in a different country, ah nakakakilabot. May goosebumps, ‘ba? Kasi sa dinami-dami ng sad and bad news, you were there giving us hope, giving us like happy news and giving us hope na meron pala, meron pa ring magandang mangyayari for the Philippines.’ So I think ‘yun ‘yung magandang representation na ginawa ko for the Philippines and also together with my identity. Giving a good representation and giving hope for our country.”
The Roots of Her Resilience
To understand Emma beyond her role in the pageantry world is to understand the women who raised her. She did not just wake up automatically within the glitz and glamour of the stage. She had to work tirelessly for it.
“I’ve been working hard. I’ve worked at a very young age. I became an OFW,” she reveals. “Sila ‘yung parang drive ko. Sila ‘yung source of strength and also my weakness.”
Her family is her anchor, but it is her mother’s specific journey that forms the backbone of Emma’s character.
“I think it’s the quiet strength. My mom, andami niyang pinagdaanan sa buhay. At a very young age, adopted sha, and andami niyang trabaho for our family para lang mapag-aral kami, na pagtapos na kami, four sisters, na okay kami sa life.”
This is the exact thread she wants to weave into her own life. “I think ‘yung quiet strength niya, ‘yun ‘yung gusto kong madala ko na hindi loud ‘yung pinapakita niya, pero ‘yung pagmamahal and ‘yung pagtatanggol sa amin. So, ‘yun ‘yung gusto ko ring maibigay at ma-inspire sa ibang tao.”
Self-Worth Over Perfection
Wearing the “Philippines” sash comes with immediate, heavy pressure. “Parang mapapatingin agad sila sa ‘yo. High expectation, ‘di ba?” she admits.
In an industry obsessed with flawlessness, Emma wants to change the conversation for the next generation of Filipinas. She knows firsthand how damaging the pursuit of perfection can be.
“When I first started pageantry, it’s more that you want to be perfect in front of a lot of people,” she reflects. “But we need to remember that if you love and you care about yourself, and you remember your self-worth, you don’t think about perfection. You think about gaano na ba ako kalayo sa napuntahan ko? Malayo na ba ‘yung narating ko? Meron na bang progress na nangyari? So, I hope they will talk about self-worth more than perfection.”
For Emma, staying connected to her purpose gives direction no matter where life takes her, believing that people should lead with purpose while living with good intentions.
Grounded in Filipino Values
When asked about a specific Filipina value she carries, she immediately names bayanihan. She experienced this cultural phenomenon firsthand during her recent international stint.
“I saw kung gaano nag-bayanihan ‘yung mga Pinoy for the voting. It’s just a simple thing, but it has a grand impact for me,” she says. “It showed na kahit gaano man sila kalalayo, Filipinos all around the world, parang nagkaisa, nagkaroon ng bayanihan. Kasi hindi lang ako, hindi lang pangalan ko, hindi lang hometown ko ‘yung lumalaban do’n. I am representing the whole Philippines, the Filipino.”
The Legacy of Being Genuine
Emma knows that her time competing will eventually conclude. When the glitter fades, she wants her real-life struggles and triumphs to be what people remember, especially for those facing their own silent battles.
“When you hear a lot of people na struggling with their mental health, struggling sa iba’t ibang bagay, pero once na marinig nila ‘yung story mo, parang ang sarap sa feeling na, ‘Thank you because you inspire me.'”
She wants to leave an authentic mark on the world.
“I want to be remembered as someone who made an impact on their lives, not just because I know crowns and titles are just temporary. But when you make an impact to other people, hinding-hindi nila makakalimutan. ‘Di ba sabi nga nila, they will forget the titles, they will forget the crowns, they will forget the year or whatever, but they will never forget the way you made them feel. So, gusto ko maramdaman nila kung paano ako naging genuine sa kanila.”
