Back to School: Classic Baon Faves

After two years of distance and online learning, students are now allowed to learn in person at school, learning again together with their classmates inside a classroom. Because it’s back-to-school season, I can’t help but reminisce about my time at elementary as well.

Recess was my favorite subject back in elementary school. There’s nothing like a free period where you can eat and talk as much as you can. When I look back, I think I went to school to eat, and not to learn.

My favorite part was trading snacks with my classmates to eat the snack I really wanted. I was very picky about what I ate at school, and whenever my mother would give me a fruit to eat at recess, I would trade them for a sweeter snack.

To celebrate the back-to-school season, rewind the clock with these classic childhood snack faves.

Inipit

This cake sandwich has five different flavors and is coated lightly with sugar. It’s sweet and fluffy; sometimes the top layer of the cake would stick to the packaging inside. The cake sticks to the roof of your mouth so you’ll always need a sip of water afterward. I remember this snack fondly because I would always try to trade my snack for it.

Dewberry

I think every 2000s kid is either a red Dewberry kid or a blue Dewberry kid. My classmates and I used to eat this like an Oreo; we would twist the biscuit and lick the cream inside, and then eat the gummy center. After that, we’ll eat the two milky biscuits separately. I have no idea why we ate it like that, but I remember debating about the merits of the superior blue Dewberry over the red Dewberry with my friends.

Cheesecake

This one is a classic back-to-school snack because eating one of these cheesecakes really filling. This was my sister’s favorite, and we’d have to argue every time we went grocery shopping because we could only buy one pack of snacks for the week and she would always pick this one. It’s very dense and crumbly, so we had to be careful while eating them lest the crumbs fall on our skirts. It tastes nothing like an actual cheesecake, so I’m not sure where they got the name.

This one is my favorite childhood snack of all time. It’s a sweet snack perfect for afternoon recess, usually with a cold drink. My mother rarely packed this for us because between the three of us, I was the only one who would eat it. I especially liked the mocha flavor, which is funny now because I can’t stand anything mocha. Perhaps I ate too much of it as a child.

Every time I think of the back-to-school season, I think of this snack, This was my mother’s favorite to buy for us because it had a dozen of biscuits inside one pack. It is crunchy and made a really good snap when you bite into it. It’s also a bit dry when you try to eat everything in one sitting. Sometimes, my books would crush it and I would end up eating a mouthful of crumbs instead. If they’re still intact, I would always share this with my friends because eating 12 biscuits in one go isn’t half as fun as sharing them.
