4 reasons for IV of Spades to make a comeback

OPM hits from Pinoy rock bands during the mid to late 2010s are truly chef’s kiss— rich with love songs to heartbreaking songs that will make you say hugot! We got Kathang-isip by Ben & Ben, Sa Ngalan ng Pag-ibig by December Avenue, Bawat Piyesa by Munimuni, and of course, Mundo by IV of Spades.

But what makes IV of Spades stands out during this era is the retro branding— from their own songs, the concept of music videos, and iconic fashion! The originally 4-member band consisting of Zild Benitez (bassist), Blaster Silonga (lead guitarist), Badjao De Castro (drummer), and Unique Salonga (former lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist) rocks the OPM scene as one of the fast top acts at their peak.

However, the remaining three members of the group officially announced their indefinite break as a band to pursue their own personal interests, last August 2020. It’s been long two years since we heard and saw them in one frame. So, here are the four reasons why IV of Spades needs to make a comeback!

CLAPCLAPCLAP! needs a sister

IV of Spades delivered their first studio album, CLAPCLAPCLAP! in January 2019. The band did not forget to incorporate their retro 70s touch in the album— featuring 15 tracks such as In My Prison, Bata, Dahan-Dahan!, and Come Inside of My Heart. This highlights the trio band’s prowess in musical compositions— truly serving as a no-skip album. CLAPCLAPCLAP! even bagged two major awards in Awit Awards 2020, receiving Album of the Year and Record of the Year for Bawat Kaluluwa. A masterpiece it is!

A three-year old album, yet the songs still never grow old to the ears. Their fans (including me) keep replaying the tracks since we do really need some vintage-inspired OPM to listen to. That’s why IV of Spades needs to fill their absence and come back with a classic album again!

Serving superb live performances

IV of Spades is that artist who eats CDs and keeps getting better when performing live. Honestly, no dull moments when seeing the band doing live acts as they know how to hype the crowd with their performance. Your list of concerts, music festivals, or gig moments is never complete if you did not witness the band. From the mesmerizing live vocals of Zild, the powerful drum beats of Badjao, and to jaw-dropping guitar solos of Blaster— that is a must-experience!

If you still have not watched IV of Spades live, especially when performing Mundo, then make it another reason to wish for a comeback of the band. Absolutely, we can’t get enough of them (and I need to see Blaster doing guitar solos again!)

Continuous international recognition

Amidst the hiatus of IV of Spades, they gain international recognition. OPM really says UNO reverse this time around as K-pop artists listen to Come Inside of My Heart!

Fans found out that popular K-pop girl group TWICE’s Momo and Sana played the said song during their live stream on V Live.

Moreover, spotted the K-pop rookie girl group LE SSERAFIM’s Yunjin on Twitter as she posted a screenshot of the same song while giving a heartfelt message to her fans.

The recognition reaches IV of Spades as the fans keep mentioning and tagging them on Twitter. Blaster, the guitarist of the band, even quote retweeted a Filipino Once with a meme and directly replied to Yunjin with “Thank You,” but written in Korean. Furthermore, Come Inside of My Heart is popular now on TikTok. This even surpassed their hit song Mundo on Spotify as the top popular song of the band. It entails the impact of IV of Spades that already reaches out of the country.

Missing dorky interviews

From the looks of IV of Spades, they look like 70s men who time travel in the present. However, when they speak in interviews, the humor of Gen Z kids unveils. Entertaining as always when IV of Spades speaks because of how awkward and carefree they are at the same time. But once you watch them answer questions, you’ll get hooked as they are men of few words, yet, can tell wise and deep messages in simple words. They show rawness, authenticity, and passion in music— especially when they guested at Tonight with Boy Abunda.

It will not hurt if IV of Spades reunites once again. However, we may have missed the trio together, we see their growth in musicality as they embark on personal journeys. Zild, Blaster, and Badjao pursue their solo music careers, exploring their own color of sounds with their projects. Hence, as a fan, we better hope for their respective success.
