Slangs and its meanings: Learning how to speak like a Gen Z

Generation Z or simply Gen Z is the preceding generation that was born in the age of fast information and has the most tech-savvy individuals. They’re all great, trust us. But, they got the zoomers scratching their heads with their seemingly foreign lingo. Some of these words from their vocabulary were popularized or referenced from other languages or dialects. However, with every new word appearing all the time, sometimes even joining the workplace, it becomes so hard to catch up. But, don’t panic! The Gen Z takeover is unstoppable. But, we won’t gatekeep this most-used slang and its meanings from you.

ate or ate and left no crumbs

Definition: It’s a term for when someone did extremely well. It can be someone’s outfit, appearance, or performance. Sometimes, others would associate it with ‘left no crumbs’ meaning they did well and didn’t make any mistakes.

Example: Rihanna ate that Superbowl halftime show and left no crumbs.

rizz

Definition: It’s a short term for charisma (chaRIZZma); refers to someone with strong allure and flirt game.

Example: It’s hard to talk to someone when you’ve got a bad rizz.

ick

Definition: This is a Gen Z way of expressing disgust or displeasure about a trait or habit. It’s like the feeling of cringe.

Example: People who still talk about their exes are giving me the ick.

pink flag

Definition: This is more like a variant of the ‘green flag’ that we know. But, pink flags mean those subtle warnings and minor inconveniences in a relationship that you need to watch out for. It can also be a weird and unusual behavior of your partner.

Example: Girl, if he’s never posted you on his socials, he might be a pink flag.

cheugy

Definition: A Gen Z term for when someone who tries hard despite following outdated trends; also for something not cool or not aesthetic anymore.

Example: My roommate is so cheugy. She just did a TikTok dance that went viral two years ago.

understood the assignment

Definition: It’s a Gen Z praise for someone who gives their 101% to what they’re doing; someone who goes above and beyond what’s expected.

Example: Tom Cruise definitely understood the assignment.

say less

Definition: It basically means that you already understood something and you need less explanation. It’s another phrase for “I get it.”

Example: Say less, bestie, I’m gonna be there to comfort you.

NPC

Definition: Be careful if someone said this to you. The gaming acronym for this is a ‘non-playable character,’ who just exists and has a programmed personality. For the zoomers, it refers to someone who doesn’t have main character energy.

Example: Me wearing the same outfit every day is my NPC behavior.

Definition: You might’ve read this somewhere on the internet. This is a short term for a nepotism baby, or anyone with famous parents and also famous themselves. Usually, it refers to celebrities.
