Hiking Shoes Qualities to Check Before Buying

Do your research

If it’s your first time hiking, you must research the mountain you’re about to climb if it’s full of rocks, rivers, trees, etc. This step will help you decide what kind of shoes to look for. Also, knowing what terrain you’re about to walk on will help you avoid injuries because you would know what shoes to get or wear. It would also help if you knew the weather forecast for that day, whether it would rain or it would be a sunny day. You can also research the types of hiking shoes to understand their features better.

Look for lugs!

It is essential that your hiking shoes properly grip the terrains you’re about to walk on. When hiking, there are many types of paths that you may encounter, like muddy trails, tree logs, boulders, lime rocks, etc. Lugs in your shoes would help you get the proper traction to prevent accidents like slipping or twisting your ankle.

Comfortability

When buying new hiking shoes, make sure that they comfortably fit your feet and that you can move your toes. Wear your hiking socks upon shoe-fitting new shoes as well! It could also be best if your shoes are soft, and if you want, mid-cut shoes will provide better ankle support to avoid ankle injuries like a sprain.

When to use waterproof hiking shoes?

When hiking in a cold place, you could wear waterproof shoes to keep your feet warm. This type of shoes would help you keep your feet dry from about 3-inches deep water. However, when you would cross a river that’s a little deep, it would be such a hassle to wear waterproof shoes as they would retain the water inside and soak your feet. On the other hand, non-waterproof shoes would give you the comfort you desire when you’re doing a day hike. Breathable hiking shoes are a must, too, because it’s waterproof and releases the moisture in your feet.

Don’t get your foot stabbed!

Your shoes should be sturdy enough to protect your foot. The sole of your shoes should be thick and hard to prevent your feet from getting pierced by sharp objects. It should also be stable and not easily twistable. This feature would help your ankles from getting sprains and injuring them.

Though hiking is a strenuous activity, it gives you many physical and mental benefits. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you ever had time to do it, I urge you to do so. The best views come after the hardest climb.
