Thrift flipping is popularised by Gen Z, basically, it is upcycling or improving clothes you bought from a thrift shop and turning them in a more stylish way.
While it is true that fashion trends keep on coming at us and it is hard to avoid them. But sadly, the fashion industry is wreaking havoc on the environment. A report shows that since the 1990s, consumer behavior has changed toward continuous clothing purchases. Therefore, as the demand continues to increase, the faster the textile waste ends up in landfills.
What’s going to happen now? Since this industry produces 20% of global waste and 10% of carbon emissions and it is estimated that by 2050 it will increase to 25%. Hence, the need for change should imperatively acknowledge not just by fashion brands and manufacturers but also by the consumers. Although there’s a stigma in buying clothes from thrift shops, in fact, it is a sustainable way of consuming clothes. Taking part, it is good to practice thrift shopping aside from it being cost-effective it is a great help to prevent the increase of carbon footprints caused by clothing production.
