Why ‘Mahal Kita, Beksman’ Is the Ultimate Must-Watch

Stills from the movie 'Mahal Kita, Beksman'

Another LGBTQ+ cinematic gem, ‘Mahal Kita, Beksmangraced the Philippine cinemas last 2022. In addition to its humor, this movie offers numerous insightful takeaways that dispel misconceptions surrounding the LGBTQ+ community and sexuality.

Why ‘Mahal Kita, Beksman’ Is the Ultimate Must-Watch

These seven nominations at the 2023 FAP Awards are a testament to this film’s deserving recognition, as it fearlessly explores the intricate facets of a person’s sexuality.

While it’s not their obligation to justify themselves to others, it’s valuable to empathize with and comprehend their perspective. This movie serves as an eye-opener, showcasing the depth of human complexity.

Furthermore, the film portrays the main protagonist, Dali, played by Christian Bables, as physically gentle and feminine, yet he embraces a woman in his heart. His character exemplifies why it’s crucial not to make assumptions about someone’s sexuality solely based on their actions.

Meanwhile, Dali‘s Dad, Jaime, portrayed by Keempee De Leon, also effectively illustrates the experiences of individuals in the community who have felt compelled to hide their true selves within their closet.

Both characters purposefully portray both sides effectively, aiming to help their audiences gain a deeper understanding. The supporting cast also plays a significant role in the movie, shedding light on the realities faced by both the LGBTQ+ community and heterosexual individuals.

This movie showcases the diverse facets of sexuality.

Masculinity cannot be defined by a person’s ability to conform to stereotypical ‘boy‘ activities. Furthermore, men can also appreciate interests such as makeup, pageantry, and various other activities traditionally associated with women.

At some point in this movie (spoiler alert), a woman poses the question about the essence of being a man. As someone open to such discussions, it prompted me to ponder the potential and definitive response to her question.

I contemplated various ways of defining masculinity since women these days can also provide like men. However, in the movie, Dali gives a simple yet profound answer. He believes that being a man is about loving genuinely– a truth I agree with.

In an era where authentic connections are rare, a masculine man can genuinely provide a sense of security regardless of his outward behaviors. While a person’s behavior can be shaped by various factors, it’s their capacity to love that distinguishes one’s sexuality from their expression.

Feminine women often possess inherent qualities of affection, nurturing, compassion, and care. Nonetheless, it takes a true man to exhibit these traits, putting them in their feminine energy while ensuring security, and leading the relationship without perpetuating abuse.

Moreover, this movie also shows that it’s better to be true to yourself than to pretend someone you’re not.

This way, genuine individuals can love and appreciate the authentic you. As cliché as that may sound, but that’s what a person should rather do.

In the movie, Dali’s courtship prompts his family to conceal their true selves due to his perceived differences. In contrast, Angel, starred by Iana Bernardez, values authenticity, embracing his family’s genuine nature in the end.

If you’re looking to establish a lasting connection with someone, there’s no need for perpetual pretense; they should embrace you for who you truly are.

Ironically, this movie also puts heterosexuals in the shoes of those who feel suffocated by being different. However, it highlights how the LGBTQ+ community often exhibits more compassion and acceptance towards Dali.

It also demonstrates how challenging it is to make people hide their true selves just to impress someone by pretending. Many in the LGBTQ+ community have endured the trauma of concealing their identities, which is why this movie shows both sides of the coin.
