The Different Types of Friends You Will Meet in Life

Friends make our lives enjoyable. They join us during our wins and losses, our wisest and most questionable times, and our happiest and saddest moments. But, much like anything in life, they do not come in a single mold or package.

There are different types of friends, and as we journey through life, we will slowly get to meet them all. Unsure which kind of friend you already met? Well then, here is a list of the type of friends you will encounter in life.

The Childhood Friends

This is your first friend. You share with them a colorful childhood, a period in your life where everything is just lively. The childhood friend is usually someone who lives near your childhood home or a same-age relative. They can drift away from your life or stay with you through thick and thin – no in-betweens.

Whether your childhood friends drifted away or are still with you, they surely hold a special place in your life that no one can ever replace.

The Institution Friends

In journeying through life, it cannot be helped to be affiliated with institutions, be it academic institutions or work-related institutions. There, you met people who you feel connected with.

Your relationship with this institution friend started because (1) you share a common experience with them, and (2) you spend a lot of time confined in a space with them. An institution friend can either stay as an institution friend or develop a more profound sense of friendship with you as time passes.

The Similar Interests Friends

Having the same favorites with another person is an unexpected way to form a friendship, but it could work. An example of this is the similar interest friend, who is your go-to individual when you want to talk about things that both of you feel passionate about.

Depending on the depth of your relationship, they might help you expound your knowledge and skills regarding your interests and hobbies.

The Come and Gos

This is your casual friend. You meet with them on different occasions, but mostly when everything is just light and breezy. A come-and-go friend is not usually part of your innermost circle, which means you are most likely not a part of their circle too.

But, somehow, both of you still enjoy each other’s company. This is because casual friendships bring new energy, something like a break from your usual delights.

The Almosts

This is your friend that is not officially a friend yet. They remain somewhere in between a stranger and someone you are familiar with. Having a friend and a dynamic like this is nothing to be embarrassed about, for it could mean that the friendship is just developing, or both of you are still testing the waters.

An almost friend usually appears when you are figuring out new environments, like a new workplace or a new city. So, choose your almost wisely, for they could help you navigate that new uncertain journey in your life.

The For Lifers

They are your constants and have been with you through most of your life’s moments. They are the first person you look for if you need someone to talk with, a support system, or just a breathing presence near you.

A for lifer friend is not brought upon by chance or proximity constraints. Instead, they are rooted in a deep sense of friendship and shared experiences that you could not find anywhere else. They are someone you are confident will stay with you for your entire life.

True to the long-standing saying, “no man is an island,” we are bound to meet different people during our life, and some of them will stick with us for a long time. So, if you still have not found every type listed here, fear not, for the time will come when they will just sail across your shore.
