Tear-Jerker Movie Recommendations That Will Make You Cry

Oddly sadistic of us to ourselves, but we do love a good tear-jerker movie every now and then. Watching these types of films gives us the motivation to pour out all our pent-up frustrations in life. And these movies give us something to blame for our ugly cry tears.

For the sake of satisfying our obsession with these films, let me share a few recommendations you might want to consider.

Listed below are five heart-wrenching movies you might want to check out if you’re looking for a good cry

The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

This gut-wrenching romantic drama film, released in 2014, is adapted from John Green’s best-selling novel under the same title. The film follows the perspective of terminally-ill 17-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, who ails from cancer. Convinced by her mom to join a support group, Hazel meets Augustus Waters, a tall and charming 17-year-old young man. Soon, the two teenagers find themselves caught in a roller-coaster star-crossed love story that is surely one for the books (pun intended ;). This romance, however, suddenly comes to a halt when a sudden unexpected tragedy comes their way.

All the Bright Places (2020)

(Warning: Topic discusses sensitive content)

Set in Bartlett, Indiana, this Netflix romantic drama flick narrates the crestfallen teenage romance between high school seniors Violet Markey and Theodore Finch. Violet, who struggles to come to terms with her sister’s death, finds herself on the edge of a bridge when Finch finds her and convinces her otherwise. Soon after their chance meeting, the two eventually began falling in love with each other and Violet starts rediscovering her renewed passion for life. However, an unexpected tragedy happened that would forever change the course of their lives.

Five Feet Apart (2019)

They say distance makes the heart grow fonder. But how can two star-crossed teenage lovers pursue a love that forcefully pulls them apart? In this 2019 romantic drama film adaptation of a novel, Cystic Fibrosis patients, Stella and Will challenge the boundaries of their ill-fated romance. As they battle the illnesses that force them to breathe borrowed air, the two lovers seek ways to make their forbidden relationship work.

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009)

They say the bond between man and his dog is like no other, and that is exactly what the premise of this 2009 drama film is. The film, which is based on a true story, narrates how a college professor forms an instant bond with an abandoned dog. Later in the story, the two would form an unbreakable connection, that would agonizingly end in tragedy. This profoundly gut-wrenching film is sure to tug the heartstrings of even the coldest of hearts.

Les Misérables (2012)

Last on our list is arguably one of the best musical dramas of all time – Les Misérables. The movie is set in 19th century France when the country was in total unrest. People suffered from poverty, hunger, and exploitation which left people grief-stricken and downtrodden. The citizens suffered countless deaths as they continue to ail from the severe ills that plagued their country. And as we follow the lives of the many characters that build up the story, we witness the horrifying truth about how unjust society truly is. To top it all up, this movie presents a beautifully crafted musical masterpiece that will leave you inconsolably crying from start to finish.
