The New Design of the 1000 Peso Bill Is Out! See the Detailed Changes Here

On December 11, 2021, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced that they were changing the 1000 peso bill. They are planning to replace the country’s World War II heroes with the Philippine eagle. Above all, it is the only transparent bill we have.

Now, just like what they promised, the 1000 pesos are out. It immediately went viral and various reactions have followed.

What makes a 1000 peso bill ‘new’?

In the new 1000 peso bill, you will see, first of all, the Philippine eagle. BSP intelligently designed it and was approved by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, as per BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno.

If you look at it closely, the new 1000 peso bill has our national flower displayed on it, the Sampaguita, in a small clear window with an embossed image. Plus, the clear vertical window bearing optically variable devices such as the 3D denomination. Inside of the vertical, there’s a logo of BSP, an iridescent blue figure, and a tactile stylized flying eagle.

While at the back, you will notice that nothing much has changed except the Philippines’ coat of arms, the BSP logo, and the Sampaguita.

Is there a reason for changing the design?

According to Diokno, it aims to focus on the fauna and flora in the Philippines. They also changed the correct spelling of the scientific name of the Philippine eagle. From Pithecophega jefforyi, it is changed to Pithecophaga jefferyi.

Moreover, the BSP also said that in order to combat fake money, the central bank is switching to plastic banknotes and polymer bills.
