We never realized the nature of Jake and Rosa’s relationship until this episode in the first season came to light. In this particular episode, Peralta and Diaz actively chase down a criminal known as the “Pontiac Bandit,” receiving assistance from an identity thief. Motivated by a suspect who possesses crucial information about the case, Jake and Rosa decide to collaborate in capturing this infamous car thief. When Captain Holt entrusts Rosa with the lead, Jake promptly calls upon their pact, where uttering the phrase “1000 push-ups” establishes trust between the both of them.

However, Jake’s pride got the best of him, and failed to uphold it. Rosa takes the agreement very seriously, so she feels hurt. Jake then requests her official involvement in the Pontiac Bandit case and willingly accepts the punishment as a way to make amends. It’s truly heartbreaking to witness Rosa’s dismay, especially considering how much she genuinely enjoys working with Jake. However, our hearts are lifted when we see her candidly expressing her emotions and smiling after Jake’s apology and adherence to their pact.

The collective enthusiasm of the entire 99 brings us immense joy! What makes this episode extra special is that it’s one of those times when we see Rosa’s infectious laughter and boundless excitement! However, it also carries a hint of gloom as Peralta and Amy Santiago started to grow apart. Nevertheless, the group decides to organize their annual Jimmy Jab Games. Jake, driven by a desire to win, requests Rosa’s friend’s contact information as the prize.

Aware of Rosa’s perceptiveness and understanding of her mature perspective, she insists that Jake should not force himself out of the predicament he finds himself in with Santiago. Despite losing the game, Jake musters the courage to confess to Rosa that he intentionally let Amy win. Rosa dislikes seeing Jake miserable, so she gave him the number to let him explore his choices for the time being. Given their longstanding bond, Rosa does what is necessary to witness Jake’s personal triumph. Rosa proves to be a remarkably effective babysitter to Jake!

As the series continues, Jake and Rosa’s relationship blossoms into something incredibly endearing and genuine. In this episode, they find themselves pitted against a duo of Swedish detectives in a jewelry theft case, provoking them to reevaluate their partnership. While Rosa has always been aware of Jake’s relationships and personal life, the same cannot be said for Jake. Rosa’s inclination towards secrecy is so profound that, at one point, Lieutenant Terry Jeffords had to conduct a thorough investigation just to glean trivial details about her past.

Nevertheless, the presence of the Swedish detectives causes Jake to question why he isn’t as close to Rosa as he had presumed. It’s quite sad to know that their conversations revolved solely around police matters in their younger years. There’s no room for intimate discussions, even though they’re friends. However, Rosa genuinely treasures their connection, encouraging her to let her guard down for the first time. As a gesture of reconciliation, Rosa shares with Jake the ideal spot for his anniversary with Amy and even divulges the name of her own boyfriend. Their shared moments are absolutely adorable!

Another remarkable episode showcases the unstoppable bond between Jake and Rosa. In this defining episode, they find themselves competing for a coveted spot on Lieutenant Melanie Hawkins’ task force. However, their intense competition to impress Hawkins inadvertently takes a toll on their friendship. Throughout the episode, a competitive rivalry matures between Jake and Rosa.

While we are accustomed to witnessing Peralta’s relentless drive, which often leads to hilariously failed attempts, it is a rare treat to see Rosa unleash her own naturally funny antics. A prime example is when she surreptitiously spiked Peralta’s drink with caffeine, resulting in his comical and disastrous downfall. However, they quickly buried their ridiculous rivalry upon realizing that both of them share a genuine desire for the job. Recognizing the strength of their bond, they vouched for each other when Hawkins asked about who made the decisive arrest. To their surprise and delight, Hawkins ultimately picks both of them, culminating in their first touching and overly festive celebratory hug! Not only that, Rosa thanked Jake with a heartfelt smile that makes all their misplaced energy worth it!

The final episode on our list vividly portrays the remarkable evolution of Jake’s relationship with Rosa. Within this episode, we witness the poignant moment when they both grant each other the freedom to lend support amidst their personal challenges. Simultaneously, the precinct finds itself grappling with a hacker who poses a threat to delete critical information from the server, while Rosa experiences a falling out with her girlfriend, Jocelyn.

Throughout previous seasons, we observed how Rosa’s relationships could profoundly impact her emotional state. Occasionally, her tendency to withhold her pain stems from a lack of effective communication. As Rosa and Jocelyn undergo their detachment, Jake serves as her emotional support. He urged Rosa to be candid about her feelings toward Jocelyn. He recognizes that Rosa’s aspiration to “win the breakup” will ultimately prove more boon than bane. With his support, Jake manages to reach Rosa and work through the difficulties with her girlfriend. That’s what friends are for!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has showcased some incredible bonds throughout the series, but none are as tight-knit as the bond between Jake Peralta and Rosa Diaz.
