Things to Remember in a Production Process

Broadcasting students breathe production inside of them. In our four-year journey as future media practitioners, every production feels like a normal day for us. But be wary, production is a methodical process that requires every ounce of patience. After a three-year experience in production, here are some tips and guides in the production process.

Pre-Prod Perfection

Pre-production is the benchmark for a perfect process. Without the pre-prod process, there would be no output available for production. The pre-production process consists of all the things related to the production and post-prod process.

Scriptwriting is a crucial part of this part. Here, the story and plot of the output will be written on paper and will be brought to life through shooting in the next process. Other than scriptwriting, the pre-prod process also consists of budgeting, canvassing, and other stuff needed in order to jump ship toward the next process.

Any irregularities or inconsistencies inside the pre-prod process will be massively reflected in the next phases. For instance, budgets for different aspects are not equally distributed. The fault in budgeting can directly hit the shooting and editing process at the same time due to inconsistent funding.

Production War

In this phase, the story on paper will be brought to life. That’s right, the production process consists of shooting and recording setups. The time allotted for the actual production process can be shorter than the first and last phases of the process.

Here, the actors recreate and act on the characters illustrated in the script. The director of photography together with the producers and directors visualize the whole thing. It may be an easy task but quality control has to be strictly observed. Every detail must be on point. Cohesiveness in shots and scenery is key to a perfect production process.

Bloody Post-Prod

Oh boy. For me, this is the hardest phase in the process. Imagine editing a 2-hour program each and every single day of the post-prod process. It usually has the longest time in a calendar due to its nature the difficulty.

An editor must ensure that every bit of detail from the script will reflect in the final outcome. Imagine facing a multi-layered rough cut each and every single day. Thinking of it makes me dizzy already.

To ensure the success of all post-production processes, here are what you need to consider. Provide at least a copy of the shot list and script to the editor. This will serve as a guide and reference upon editing the output. Give a lot of time in the post-production process. Remember, editing is a labor of love. Lastly, arrange all files and documents neatly as possible.
