The Fanaticism of AlDub Fans

Since 2014, the love team AlDub had maintained its grasp on its loyal fans and supporters. There are times, however, when fans would cross the line according to the pair’s other half Maine Mendoza. Here is a quick rundown of the origin and updates on the fanaticism of AlDub fans. The love team AlDub originated from Alden Richards and Mendoza’s character, Yaya Dub, pairing in Eat Bulaga. AlDub was, in fact, formed accidentally when Maine broke into her character after seeing her celebrity crush Alden.

In September 2014, the love team flourished through the segment Kalyeserye. Maine Mendoza went viral in Dubsmash as someone who lip-syncs over lines from films, TV shows, viral videos, and songs. On the other hand, Alden was a budding actor on the GMA Network.

Overnight, the love team AlDub grew exponentially with its hashtags trending on Twitter worldwide. AlDub even had an event on October 24, 2015, wherein Alden and Maine met adequately in front of the fans. Acquiring thousands of fans, the tickets sold by the benefit concert Sa Tamang Panahon were used in building AlDub Libraries all over the Philippines.

Recently, Maine and Alden. . .

Years after their love team made history, Maine and Alden appeared in shows and TV advertisements together. Lately, however, the two prioritized their individual careers, denying their fans of their love team’s comeback. In an interview with talent manager Ogie Diaz last November 3, Maine opened up about the behavior of some of their love team’s fans – especially after the announcement of her engagement with Arjo Atayde. Numerous times, Maine had called out their fans,

I tried calling them out couple of times already, pero ayaw po rin nilang maniwala.

Maine also explained that while she understood the feelings of their fans, she also valued the truth over anything else.

Mas okay kasi na early on pa lang, paalam mo na ‘yong totoo. P’wede naman tayong mag-enjoy, ma-entertain na alam natin ‘yong katotohanan na wala tayong sinasaktan or ida-damage.

Maine also took the interview as an opportunity to call out fans who still believe that she and Alden are married with a child secretly raised from the public eye. Despite her statement, some fans still did not heed her concern and even expressed distrust towards the interview.

The Fanaticism of AlDub Fans

After Maine’s interview on Ogie Diaz’s vlog, fans expressed their disbelief on Facebook and Twitter. And it was as Maine said: most of them still hold on to the fact that Maine and Alden secretly married each other and had a child.

Some fans even went as far as dissecting Maine’s Instagram stories and pictures, circling parts of the image that fit into their narrative.

Fans also began attacking Ogie Diaz online, saying that he interviewed Maine to further hide her marriage with Alden. Now, idolizing someone isn’t bad. In fact, having idols would often inspire a person to be better. However, fans must realize that there are limitations that they should follow.

Fans must acknowledge that their idols have personal lives apart from the ones presented onscreen. Besides acknowledging their limitations, fans must also learn to see their idols individually, especially those who are a part of a love team like AlDub.

But sometimes, becoming aware of limitations is not enough. Before they declare themselves as fans, fans must learn to respect their idols’ decisions outside their love teams, and outside their onscreen personas.
