Sunshine Dizon speaks her thoughts on legalizing divorce in the Philippines

Sunshine Dizon Divorce

Actress Sunshine Dizon believes that divorce should be legalized in the country, saying how it is normal for people to fall out of love.

During the virtual conference of the upcoming Kapamilya series Marry Me, Marry You, Dizon said,

“Napaka-plastic ko naman kung sasabihin kong marriage is forever, hindi naman totoo… for me, I’m speaking for myself! Push niyo yan. Gusto ko nung divorce kasi it’s normal for people to fall out of love.”

(I would be a hypocrite if I say that marriage is forever, which is not true… for me, I’m speaking for myself. Fight for that. I am in favor of divorce because it’s normal for people to fall out love.)

The 38-year-old star has two kids with her estranged husband, Timothy Tan.

“So bakit natin hindi bibigyan ng pagkakataon ‘yung mga tao na gusto mag-start anew, di ba? Kailangan ba talagang meron parating psychological reason or whatever, or something drastic na dahilan para lang maghiwalay ‘yung dalawang tao?”

(Why won’t we give chance to those people who want to start anew, right? Is a psychological reason or anything drastic needed for two people to part ways?)

“Minsan talagang hindi na sila para sa isa’t-isa. So I hope, you know, the laws will push through with regards to divorce here in the Philippines. So that magkaroon ng freedom naman ‘yung mga tao, di ba, para magmahal ulit, magsimula ulit. That’s my take on it.”

(Sometimes, they are just not for each other. I hope, you know, the laws will push through with regard to divorce here in the Philippines. So that people who want to start and love again, have the freedom to do so. So, that’s my take on it.)

Last August, the House panel approved the absolute divorce bill.

I just want to state here that divorce should be legalized here in the Philippines. Many marriages suffer from domestic abuse and a lot more issues happening behind the doors. And with the advent of information technology, an option of having to file for divorce online should also be accessible.

The kids shouldn’t be a reason to “rescue” a marriage. They will suffer more while witnessing the apparent conflict between their parents, especially if physical violence is involved.

And if religion is your answer to prevent divorce from happening, please be reminded that not everyone has the same belief or religion. Also, there is a separation between the church and the state enshrined in the constitution. Beliefs shouldn’t interfere in the art of law-making.
