Social Media Cats: A Serotonin Boost

The flashy realm of social media is not only being conquered by humans. Exuding intellect and talent accompanied with loads of charm in photos and videos? Our feline friends surely can slay it too! Today, social media cats don’t even have to try hard just to be prominent online.

If you are an ailurophile (cat lover) like me, then your social media algorithm probably feeds you cat content. Cat content that usually floods my news feeds includes funny cat compilation videos and cat memes. Scrolling to these contents is my daily dose of serotonin and a diversion from the stressful human world. In science, Serotonin is a hormone and a neurotransmitter known as a happy chemical (Konkel,2022). This chemical plays a vital role in mood regulation such as well-being and happiness. It goes without saying, pet lovers and fur parents will definitely agree that cats are fount of good vibes. Despite their independent and unbothered attributes, their gentle and affectionate side can swoon you into giving them head pats.

Effortlessly cute and funny, these social media cats from Instagram and TikTok are indeed a happy pill and mood booster:

Luna (@monkeycatluna)

Luna is popular for her nose scrunches. With millions of Instagram and TikTok followers, her scrunchy nose contents captured while enjoying a crunchy treat are such mood-lifting. Her judgy side eye can even make you question your life choices.

Puff (@thatlittlepuff)

Also known as Meow Chef or Chef Puff, this cat has exceptional cooking skills. Puff currently has 33.6 million TikTok followers, even greater than other artists and personalities on the platform. His palatable creations can trigger your cravings but his wholesome poker face somehow is a consolation

Chingkii is an odd-eyed cat. She has a rare condition called heterochromia in which her two eyes differ in color. Chingkii went viral on TikTok after her video climbing a tall coconut tree was uploaded by her owner. She really is a confident cat, or let’s say spider cat flexing her nine lives.

A goofy yet rageful cat, that’s what Yet is. Many call her ‘albino orange cat’ or ‘an orange cat disguised as white’ considering her chaotic and risky stances. Her hot-tempered attitude shown in her warning gazes and airplane ears opposite to her soft girl facade looks is a sight to behold.

Luna Rose (@hello_luna_rose)

Luna never disappoints in being adorable. Her love for food of course adds up to her lovely traits as she firmly believes that snack is life!

Coffee aka Mr. White (@white_coffee_cat)

Coffee is an eight-year-old cat that survived his battle against cancer. His white fluffy coat like those of a polar bear will make you wish to hug him. He loves to wake up his fur parent, duly making sense of his name.

Coby The Cat (@cobythecat)

Coby is another fluffy white furball with stunning perfectly drawn eyeliner. Eight-year-old like Coffee, he will certainly brighten your day with his random contents packed with cuteness.

Nala Cat (@nala_cat)

Nala holds the Guinness World Record for the most followers on Instagram for a cat, given in 2019. Apart from her fame and endearing round face, Nala’s story brought inspiration to many. She was a shelter cat until a person with a generous heart decided to adopt her. Now, she has her own pet supplies company named Love, Nala.

The famous cat sitting beside a glass of wine with disco lights and background music is none other than Stephan. His impassive and drowsy face built up the mood of his videos that trended on social media.

A Siamese cat with natural airplane ears, dobby was named after the house-elf Dobby of Harry Potter. People who watched her ‘daily routine’ TikTok video may find it relatable, well, we do experience mood swings, right?

Fortune (@fortuneiscat)

Fortune is the sweetest smiling cat one could ever find on the internet. Her sun-kissed photos, smiling and sticking her tongue, out can surely melt anyone’s heart.

Smudge The Table Cat (@smudge_lord)

Who wouldn’t forget the white table cat meme? Perhaps everyone on the internet has seen it transpiring in their news feeds, even its multiple versions. The cat’s name is Smudge, now the coolest meme cat in the business. He may have the gremlin reputation in the meme world, but what only matters to him is his favorite taters.

These social media cats proved how for ailurophiles, a cure to a bad day is just a whisker away. Beyond their fluffiness and mesmerizing eyes, they hold a power capable of spreading pawsitivity, making our life bearable. Certainly,  stress relievers may come in the form of a purring four-legged creature.
