Rotten Tomatoes officially rates ‘Black Widow’ as certified fresh

With 160 critic reviews, Black Widow seems to be on a good path. Rotten Tomatoes officially rates it as certified fresh ahead of its long-awaited release.

Fans have long waited for this standalone movie. Especially as it features the first-ever female representation we got from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We first saw her saving Tony Stark‘s life as an undercover agent for S.H.I.E.L.D in Iron Man 2. And, now, it has been two years after her death. As Marvel offers us her gritty backstory, we remember how she died. “Oh, right. She died on the space planet where a ghost Nazi lives.”

Still, we finally get a glimpse of her past as she goes on the run after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Forced to return to her native Russia, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) joins forces with her adoptive sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Together, they delve into the history of the Red Room that created them. And, they attempt to foil a deadly conspiracy tied to it.

Rotten Tomatoes officially rates Black Widow as certified fresh

Originally slated for a May 2020 release, the film has become a result of constant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the excitement surrounding Black Widow has remained. Despite being pushed back to November 2020 and once again to May 2021. More than a year later, Marvel audiences understandably clamor for the opportunity to see the highly anticipated movie in theaters. However, it remains available for stream via Premier Access on Disney+.

Response from critics remains mostly positive. As of this writing, Black Widow sits on an 83% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the 83% rating, Black Widow continues to have mixed reviews. According to Uproxx’s Mike Ryan, the movie “doesn’t feel like any kind of final sendoff.” Kevin Lee from Film Inquiry, on the other hand, points out that Natasha’s fans will be satisfied with the movie. Meanwhile, Splice Today’s Stephen Silver feels like this has become the “first Marvel film in years that feels like a pure action-adventure movie.”

According to ScreenRant, much of the positivity around the film centers on the dynamic between cast members. In particular Natasha and her surrogate family. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would love to work with Scarlet Johansson again. However, it would be fitting to exit the franchise on a high note. She sacrificed herself to undo the actions of Thanos during the events of Avengers: Endgame. So, it remains a general understanding that Black Widow will become Johansson’s final turn as Natasha Romanoff.

Watch her final goodbye on July 9!
