Miss Universe removes pageant age-restrictions

There’s no better time to aim for the universe but now! In a brand-new development, the Miss Universe beauty pageant announces that it has eliminated its age requirements, allowing women from all ages over 18 to compete in its competition.

Miss Universe 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel made the announcement during her appearance at the Tanner Fletcher’s spring 2024 show at the New York Fashion Week.

In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Gabriel shares how she appreciates Miss Universe for seeking more ways to be inclusive and to provide a better platform for women. Stating that:

It’s a bold group of women in charge over there, and you know what, a lot of people tend to follow what we do – it’s nice to be a standard-bearer, and I’m proud that we got to do this.

Following this announcement, the Miss Universe Organization states that starting next year, this change will be effective for all its pageant systems.

Currently, the pageant is open to women whose age spans from 18 to 28. Gabriel who is 29 is the pageant’s oldest titleholder. During the Q and A at Miss Universe 2022, she mentions age restrictions as one of the aspects she wishes to be changed.

In 2012, the pageant made the decision of allowing Transgender women to compete. Last year, married mothers and those with children were given permission to participate as well.

Miss Universe 2023 will be taking place on November 18 in El Salvador. Staging its 72nd edition, this year will feature a diverse group of candidates which includes Philippine representative Michelle Dee.

The 28-year-old model and actress will aim to win the country its fifth Miss Universe crown. Earlier this year, she came out as bisexual.
