Micro USB or USB-C: Does it matter?

In this day and age, most devices are now supporting a USB Type-C port. Leaving the original Micro USB behind the competition.

Is Micro USB really behind the competition? And is USB-C really better? With the prevalence of one over the other, the real question is – does it really matter?

Data Transferring Speed

Some would argue that this is irrelevant, but not to most people. In reality, data transfer speed matters. Why? Because it plays an important role in the determination of choosing a USB connector, to begin with.

The current USB-Type C makes full use of the USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 technology, giving a data transfer speed rate of 5Gbps to 10Gps. Unlike that, the Micro USB greatly lags behind. The standard data transfer speed is only up to 480Mbps. These numbers are solely based on the speed rate through a USB port. With that, the data speed of these two USB connectors solely varies depending on the specific devices in reality. However, it is something to consider, still.

Charging Speed

Just like the Data Transfer Speed, the charging speed is also heavily based on what type of USB connector one is using. Stating the obvious, USB C is better in terms of charging compared to Micro USB. It is because the former provides a higher power supply than the latter.

More to that, Micro USB was often used on some relatively old devices and is now rarely used these days. That said, USB C became the standard port for Android’s ongoing charging method. This port enables smartphone companies in maximizing their fast-charging features, from 65W even up to 120W.

In a simpler sense, USB C is faster and more flexible as it can both be used to input our output power. While the Micro USB only has the capability to input power.

Durability

With its current flexible design, the USB C port is very open for reversibility. We can plug the cable easily, having no worries if we might get it wrong on the first try. On the other hand, the Micro USB demands the cable be perfectly inserted into its small port.

And in terms of longevity, it is clear that USB C is the future trend. And there is a possibility Apple will integrate it into their iPhones, the same way they use it for their iPads. In general, there is no way a device that supports the old port could last in the technological world dominated by USB C.

Truly, in terms of durability, it is no doubt that USB C is winning.

But does it actually matter, though? If you care about the three factors listed above, then it does. But if you do not, then I guess you should now. Considering the aforementioned information, it is advisable to switch from Micro USB to USB C now. Make the switch, and you will never regret it.
