Like A Boss: Filipinos are getting tied up for some Thai

When the Thai fever reached its tipping point in the Philippines, everyone was in lockdown. Before that, we’ve only heard some semblance of Thailand’s pop culture from scarce online media or some odd news. We know it’s a vacation hotspot. It has floating markets, golden temples, good food, and rich culture. But aside from those, for most Filipinos, Thailand was just that Southeast Asian neighbor.

Not until 2020, people only scratched the surface for The Land of Smiles. However, like a long lost friend who was there for us in our lowest days, Thailand caught our collective hearts. Filipinos accepted open arms. Although it wasn’t that we were uninterested in Thailand’s current affairs or their history — we did! We were just too preoccupied.

Then the pandemic came, and all of us suddenly had spare time on our hands. So it was a given that we needed an outlet. All eyes turned online and on YouTube and Netflix where a collection of TV series have been uploaded for our convenience. With the strike of Nang Kwak’s good fortune, we came across the treasure trove that is Thai TV programming — more specifically the Boys’ Love (BL) lakorn.

The current surge of the BL genre in the Philippine industry is without a doubt due to Thailand’s influence. But it’s also undeniable that Thailand’s entertainment industry has so much to give. From storylines that draw in a familiar vibe to plots that are just out of the box, lakorn has a lot of potentials while showcasing great talent.

Like A Boss

One promising Thai actor is a testament that Thailand’s entertainment industry is a constellation of bright stars. Chanakan ‘Boss’ Poonsiriwong is a 27-year old actor and model. Having been born in Bangkok, he considers being a Thai celebrity an amazing experience. In an interview with Village Pipol Magazine, Boss shares more about himself, as well as what it’s like to live in Thailand. Let’s get to know this 6-footer a little better!

To start off, can you let us know for how long you’ve been an actor, and is acting something you’ve always dreamt of doing?

เริ่มต้นเป็นนักแสดงตั้งแต่อายุ 19 ครับ ผลงานชิ้นแรกเป็นภาพยนตร์ ชื่อเรื่อง Art Idol อยู่วงการมาประมาณ 8 ปีแล้วครับ การเป็นนักแสดงเป็นงานที่เคยแอบฝันเล็กๆไว้ แต่ก็คิดว่าตัวเองคงทำงานเบื้องหลังมากกว่าเพราะเรียนจบคณะนิเทศศาสตร์มา สาขาภาพยนตร์ ชอบทำคลิป ตัดต่อนู้นนี่ สุดท้ายพอได้มาเป็นนักแสดงจริงๆก็ชอบครับ รู้สึกสนุกทุกครั้งที่ได้สวมบทบาทตัวละครใหม่ๆ

When I was 19, I got the main role for the movie called “Art Idol”. I have been in the industry for about 8 years now. Being an actor was not exactly my dream job, since I have a degree in Film and Digital Media. So I preferred working behind the scenes. However, once I became an actor, I started to like it. It’s fun and challenging every time I have to play a new character.

What’s it like growing up in Thailand and becoming a celebrity in your country? Moreover, if not acting, what could you be doing now professionally?

What’s a typical day for you? Can you tell us the first thing you do after waking up until the last thing before you sleep?

My typical day would start with having a cup of hot Americano and checking my Instagram. If there is no work scheduled, I would love to go to the gym, jog at the park, or spend time with my dog. At the end of the day, after applying some skincare, I would surf the internet on my phone and off to sleep.

What’s a character you’ve portrayed that left a mark on you? What was his role in the story and from what show was he from?

เชน ชนาธิป จาก ละคร โซ่เวรี ครับ เป็นตัวละครที่ผมชอบมากครับ เพราะเป็นเรื่องผมรวยที่สุด และได้เผยลุคที่ดู bad boy ออกมาให้เห็น และดีใจที่ทุกคนชอบครับ เพราะเป็นตัวละครที่ผมสร้างคาแรคเตอร์ออกมาอย่างตั้งใจมากๆครับ

Shane Chanatip from “So Way Ree” is my favorite because his wealthy bad boy traits are quite different from my personal traits. It was also my first time as a playboy. So I was very determined to interpret and portray the character. I’m very happy that everyone liked him.

Thailand and the Philippines are so alike, but also very different. What do you know about the Philippines, and what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear it? Do you have any plans of visiting the country once the pandemic ends?

สิ่งที่พอรู้เกี่ยวกับฟิลิปปินส์ คือเป็นประเทศเพื่อนบ้านที่อยู่ไม่ไกลจากไทยครับ แล้วเรื่องนักมวย ปาเกียว กับนางงามครับ ส่วนสิ่งเเรกที่นึกถึง เมื่อพูดถึงฟิลิปปินส์ คือ fc แฟนคลับของผมที่นั่นครับ มีโอกาสได้พูดคุยและคอมเม้นท์กันใน IG บ่อยๆ
ถ้ามีโอกาสหลังหมดสถานการณ์โควิดก็อยากไปเที่ยวฟิลิปปินส์ อยากไปเจอแฟนคลับที่นั้นครับ อยากไปมาก หวังว่าทุกคนที่นั้นจะรอเจอผมนะครับ

The Philippines and Thailand are neighboring countries. The Philippines consists of a thousand islands and is known for its beautiful nature and beaches. Speaking of the Philippines, basketball, boxing, and beauty pageants would come to mind. But the very first things that come to my mind are my fans there. I frequently receive supportive comments from Filipino fans on Instagram. I wish the COVID outbreak would be over soon, so I could visit the Philippines and meet my fans…hope to see you soon!!

How has the global pandemic affected your country, your work, and your daily life?

The global pandemic affected Thailand’ tourism industry, many hotels and tourist attractions have to be temporarily closed. It also affected the entertainment industry and my career. Many events have been postponed, canceled, or even changed the actual event into a virtual one. As for a TV show shooting, there are additional protocols, such as physical distancing and so on to make sure that everyone on set will be safe from the virus. I try to be positive that I would have more time to relax at home to do what I like to do, like making video contents for my YouTube channel. Still, I hope that the pandemic would end and things would be back to normal soon.

Thailand’s pop culture is growing in the Philippines. Because of the Boys’ Love (BL) genre, many Filipinos have come to love your shows and have become aware of your rich culture. What do you love about Thailand’s entertainment industry? What do you think makes Thai lakorn unique?

สิ่งที่ชอบเกี่ยวกับวงการบันเทิงไทยก็คือ คนในวงการบันเทิงและทีมงานจะมีความสนิทสนมกัน ช่วยเหลือกัน เรียกว่าเป็นความสัมพันธ์แบบพี่น้องในวงการบันเทิง ไม่จำกัดค่ายหรือสังกัดใดๆ รวมไปถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิลปินกับแฟนคลับที่มีความเข้าถึงง่ายและมีความใกล้ชิดกัน มีการทำกิจกรรมร่วมกันบ่อยๆ ซึ่งน่ารักมากๆครับ เหมือนผมกับแฟนคลับของผม

One thing I love about the Thai entertainment industry are the people. The actors and the staff work pretty closely together, and we treat our colleagues like they’re family. The relationship between artists and their fans are also very close. The fan meets and events are held from time to time. Sometimes it’s held on special occasions, such as an artist’s birthday, for example. Which is so adorable.

What makes Thai lakorn unique, I think, is the storyline, which touches the audience and is not too complicated to follow.

Have you thought about going the BL route in the near future? Is the BL genre something exclusive to certain TV networks in Thailand, or is it open and accepted?

แนวBL เป็นแนวที่ผมไม่เคยลองเลยแต่รู้สึกว่าถ้าเราได้ลองคงน่าตื่นเต้นน่าดู เพราะขนาดแค่เรา ดูละครแนวBL เราเองก็ยังรู้สึกเขินตามเลยครับ

I haven’t had a chance to get a role in a BL drama yet, but I think it would be exciting and would be a great challenge for me. For the position of BL dramas in Thailand, I think it’s still exclusive to certain TV channels. Although, people are becoming more open-minded and accepting about the BL genre.

What’s one Thai dish that you definitely want Filipinos to eat should they visit Thailand? What’s that one tourist spot that you think every Filipino should be a part of their travel plans?

ส่วนสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวอยากให้มาคือ สยามสแควร์ ครับ เพราะเมืองไทยเราแฟชั่นเปลี่ยนตลอดเวลาและมีให้เลือกเยอะมากอยากให้คนฟิลิปปินส์ได้มาดูแฟชั่นที่บ้านเราด้วยครับ

I would recommend you to try the LabLin bun (Stick-out-tongue bun) because it’s my most favorite. Sadly, I cannot have a lot of LabLin buns, or else I would get chubby.

As for the tourist destination, I would recommend Siam Square because it’s the hub of all things cool, fashion, foods, and so on.

Filipinos are getting tied up

It’s true that multimedia can help bridge nations. Pop culture indeed has a way of bringing different cultures into a shared bubble. We’ve seen that happen first hand in the Philippines with Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. Their influence on Filipino trends can’t be denied — from fashion to entertainment and business to aesthetics.

With Thailand’s pop culture’s rise, we can’t help but start noticing how we’re slowly falling in love with pink milk and mango sticky rice. Thai Boys’ Love shows have been there for us during our quarantine blues that Philippine show business successfully adjusted to the demand. And to think that’s just the beginning!

Just like how much Boss Chanakan wants to learn more about the Philippines, we’d love to get to know Thailand better too. There’s still a lot we have yet to discover about Asia’s majestic kingdom. Like the determined adventurer, we can travel and enjoy the country once we can. But for now, we’ll go through all the lakorn and raikantopeni we can find.

We still don’t know where the Thai fever will take us or for how long it’ll simmer, but one thing’s for sure —Filipinos are getting tied up with Thai pop culture.
