How I Relate to Matilda by Harry Styles

There will always be that one song that seems like talking about your life. It is when every line feels that it is meant for you. The moment I heard “Matilda” and read its lyrics, it did not just mirror the struggles I have been through. It felt like Harry Styles was talking to me directly. Singing words of comfort.

I am Matilda

It is implied in the song how Matilda never takes seriously what she feels. I never wanted to share the struggles I’ve been through. I also dealt with the trauma alone. Harry reminds us in the song that we can always let go. It is not our fault that we grew separately from some people. Especially from those who caused us to feel this way.

You don’t have to go home

The bridge part is my favorite in this song. Harry said “You’re just in time, make your tea and your toast.” It is implying that taking care of yourself is necessary. Also, as they say, it’s okay not to feel okay. For me, it’s totally fine to not forgive. It’s fine not to go home to the people who made you suffer, even if they are your Family. At the end of the day, what’s important is you choose yourself. Always choose the people who choose you.  We don’t always have a solution for the things that we can’t control, like Matilda experienced. Harry stated that it’s up to Matilda’s hands on how she wants her life to be, moving forward. We can’t forget about the past, but we can use it to propel us to do better in life

There are moments when the burden swallows me whole. As Harry mentioned, “I know they won’t hurt you anymore as long as you can let them go,” and that’s exactly what I did. I left behind the life I had before and built a better one.

In Harry’s point of view

In Harry’s point of view, he stated that “It’s none of my business, but it’s just been on my mind”. The essence of that I think is he doesn’t want to be all over Matilda when she’s struggling. He lends his ears and heart and shows the willingness to be with her.

Giving advice isn’t always the wisest thing to do. Sometimes, it’s better that you just listen to their thoughts and stories to let them know they have someone to share with.I learned a lot on this specific track. I will always be a fan of how Harry approaches music. His versatility, musicality, and meaningful writing have produced amazing music, which I am so grateful for. When you’re down, know that there will be better days ahead. You can grieve today, but tomorrow, press-on.
