Hiraeth, homesickness you cannot return to or never was

The word hiraeth comes from Welsh and does not have an equivalent word in English. It is simply a feeling of homesickness for a place that you are unable to return to. A home that may or may not have ever existed. It is a longing, a yearning, and the sadness that you feel for the places in your past that you can no longer visit. Although it’s a short word, it conveys a lot of meaning. As we continue to explore it, we have come to the conclusion that the meaning of the word “hiraeth” alone is profound. The feeling that the word is giving me tells me that it weighs heavily on the mind of a person.

Aching to connect with our feelings. The way that we give the impression that we are happy on the outside when, in reality, we are not truly happy on the inside. When we stop and think about it, we realize how much we don’t allow ourselves to truly enjoy life. As we try to think back to a time when we were truly content with our lives, we can’t help but miss the old version of ourselves. The reality is that it is not something that can be easily reversed by us. We are unable to suppress the feelings that we experience, and as a result, there are times when we fail to notice them. How it really makes you feel.

It’s amazing how much we miss being able to hug our favorite people when they are so far away. The terrible feeling of melancholy that creeps into us is always present. We long for the way in which they held, touched, and hugged us in the most compassionate manner imaginable. The sentiment of longing and melancholy is experienced when reflecting on times gone by. It is the feeling that we are unable to comprehend, despite the fact that it is very important. Because it is valid, what we feel is valid.

There are some things that, no matter how much we wish for them, we simply cannot get back. We can’t just ignore the problem or ignore our own thoughts about a solution. It’s one of the greatest things about being human. The degree to which we can adjust to new circumstances and feelings.
