X.AI — Elon Musk founds new AI company

The Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk has launched a new company dedicated to artificial intelligence called X.AI.

According to a Nevada filing, the company was incorporated last month, with Musk as its director and Jared Birchall as its secretary. The filing obtained by The Verge indicates that Musk incorporated the business on March 9th, 2023.

There have been rumors about Musk founding an AI company for days, with Business Insider reporting that Musk had purchased thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs) for an upcoming generative AI project.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Musk also talked about creating an AI firm that would compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Musk even reportedly sought money from SpaceX and Tesla investors.

The billionaire did not mention his plans to build an AI company during an interview on Twitter Spaces when he was asked about all his GPU purchases, stating “…it seems like everyone and their dog is buying GPUs at this point.”

The purported X.AI name matches the branding of the X Corp. name he has since assigned to Twitter, along with the “X” label he’s applied to his vision of an “everything app.”

OpenAI, the AI organization Musk co-founded in 2015 but walked away from in 2018, has been openly opposed by Musk, who recently signed a letter calling for a pause on “giant AI experiments.”

With technology like ChatGPT and GPT-4, OpenAI has become a hugely recognizable name in recent months and is partly responsible for kick-starting Microsoft and Google’s current push to incorporate AI more deeply into their products.

Elon Musk has really done a few big swings this year and it seems like he is not stopping anytime soon. What do you think about this? Sound off in the comments below.
