Apple TV 4K introduces multiview to cater to sports streams

A new multiview feature is coming to Apple TV 4K just in time for tonight’s Friday Night Baseball games, Tom’s Guide (via TechCrunch) reports. The feature is still in beta and will let you watch up to four sports streams simultaneously.

Apple is finally gearing up to release multiview after developer Steve Moser discovered it in Apple’s code last month. According to TechCrunch, the feature is available within the tvOS beta 16.5, which you can gain access to by heading to the Settings app and then hitting System > Software Updates > Get Beta Updates.

If you have the beta, you can watch multiple streams simultaneously by turning on a game and selecting “Add Game.” From there, you can even mess with the layout a bit, whether you want to enlarge one of the games while the rest are stacked up on the right side of the screen or simply view two games side by side.

According to TechCrunch, you can also choose which game you want to hear using the Apple TV remote.

As of late, Apple isn’t the only streaming service experimenting with multiview. YouTube TV has also started testing multiview for sports games, but it appears to be more limited than Apple’s. Since you can’t customize the multiview experience just yet, for example, YouTube TV offers only curated bundles of multiview content.

Multiview will also be available on Apple TV Plus during tomorrow’s Major League Soccer games in addition to tonight’s Major League Baseball game. Although Apple hasn’t confirmed that this feature is rolling out yet, it’s unclear if (or when) people without Apple TV 4K will be able to take advantage of it.
