Sense8: A Hidden Gem on Netflix

Netflix is known for canceling tv series that supposedly “flopped.” But really they just like to keep the more mainstream shows because they earn more profit from that. One of the actually good series on Netflix is called “Sense8.” It may be considered a hidden gem because it is not as popular as other shows like Stranger Things or The Umbrella Academy. However, Sense8 tells a meaningful story of eight people, having different races, ethnicities, genders, and social statuses. It is a show that delves into the depth of human senses, connection, and overall complexity of life.

Who are the Sensates?

Sense8 - Netflix Series - Where To Watch

Sensates, or Homo Sensoriums, are different species of humans who are able to connect to their “clusters” telepathically and empathically. There are three main abilities that sensates possess: psychic link, sharing, and visiting. . They can access one another’s thoughts, feelings, and even skills. If one of them is in trouble and in need of help physically, the others who have the abilities to get through the situation may access the former’s body and do their thing. It is important to note that they come from different continents, so proximity is not an issue in their connection. Although their senses may get stronger when near one another.

The main cluster of the series comprises eight sensates. Will Gorski, Riley Blue, Nomi Marks, Sun Bak, Capheus Onyango, Lito Rodriguez, and Wolfgang Bogdanow. They were all born on the same date, the 8th of August, all at the same time.
The eight of them were all strangers at first. And it was very interesting how they managed to adjust to the changes within their reality- each of them clustered with seven other people. Totally chaotic I can only imagine having that many people inside your brain.

Sense8 also prioritized the integration of every culture involved in the episodes. They were not only entertaining to watch but educational as well. It is not every day that TV shows make an effort to immerse the characters in their own culture. This gives the essence of authenticity and an appropriate representation of cultural differences.

The show is political at its core, discussing homophobia, racism, sexism, and so much more. It is also very sensual in nature as it is the goal of the show to express humans in their most raw and honest form.

The producers and directors of Sense8 are the Wachowski sisters, Lana and Lilly, known for their masterpiece that is The Matrix. They have always been very political with their works. And they incorporate that very well in the artform of movies and shows that they produce.
