Remembering Robbie Coltrane with Hagrid and his best quotes

As a massive fan of Harry Potter, the news of Robbie Coltrane and his passing deeply saddened me. He passed away last October 14, 2022. He died at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland, at 72. Aside from his other roles in theater, film, and television, his portrayal of the loving giant Rubeus Hagrid was my personal favorite of all.

During the reunion, Robbie Coltrane expressed that fifty years from now, there are still children who will enjoy the franchise. Although he wouldn’t be there, Hagrid will. And, we will continue to watch Harry Potter and see the life he had given to our favorite lovable half-giant.

Remembering Robbie Coltrane with Hagrid and his best quotes

Although he wasn’t the smartest character in the franchise, it didn’t stop him from providing words of wisdom to our favorite trio — Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger. He has a huge heart and is always there to offer his advice to the Golden Trio in every situation. It ranges from funny to heartwarming emotion and that’s easily why he became such a beloved character in Harry Potter. He’s such a lovable and dedicated character that Ron even said, “Neville will play Quidditch for England before Hagrid lets Dumbledore down.”

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

“Understand this, Harry, ’cause it’s very important – not all wizards are good. Some of them go bad. A few years ago there was one wizard that went as bad as you can go.”

Although Hagrid has always been the comedic relief throughout the movies and the books, he was the first person to tell Harry about Voldemort. As the first-ever magical person that Harry interacted with, he tells Harry that good and bad still exist even in the wizarding world. It’s a crucial lesson for Harry to learn. And, we have Hagrid to thank for teaching Harry that.

“Don’ you worry, Harry. You’ll learn fast enough. Everyone starts at the beginning at Hogwarts, you’ll be just fine. Just be yerself. I know it’s hard. Yeh’ve been singled out, an’ that’s always hard. But yeh’ll have a great time at Hogwarts — I did — still do, ’smatter of fact.”

Learning new things about life and yourself can leave you feeling overwhelmed and overrated. There are times when you would think that you’ve figured it all out by now. But, that’s not the case at all. However, sometimes, all we could think was damn, I know nothing. And, Hagrid’s advice to Harry has always comforted me. So, whenever I feel overwhelmed and stressed out, I just remember that someone believes in me as Hagrid does in Harry.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

“Don’t you think on it, Hermione, don’t you think on it for one minute.”

In the Chamber of Secrets, we were introduced to a wrongful name that describes Muggle-born witches and wizards. When Draco Malfoy called Hermione a Mudblood, Ron defended her honor and tried to hex him. However, due to the broken wand, he ended up hexing himself. So, they went to Hagrid to help out. When Harry and Hermione told him what had happened, he let the young witch know just about what he thought about her. He was confident in her intellect and her skills, telling her to brush what Draco had said off of her shoulder.

“If anyone wanted ter find out some stuff, all they’d have ter do would be ter follow the spiders. That’d lead ‘em right! That’s all I’m sayin.’”

This is what I meant about Hagrid being funny. We didn’t know whether or not he knew about Ron’s fear of arachnids. Ron was right. Why spiders? Why couldn’t it be follow the butterflies? Despite the scary experiences with the spiders, we did find out about the Chamber of Secrets and whoever might have opened it. He gave them a chance to find out useful information. And, that’s all that matters… right?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

“C’mon, now, get a move on! Got a real treat for yeh today! Great lesson comin’ up! Everyone here? Right, follow me!”

Hagrid being a Professor was the best thing to have come out of the entire franchise. His love for magical creatures was unending and he was so excited to share his knowledge with his young students. Although it was ruined by none other than Draco for sauntering towards a hippogriff and insulting it, he did know what he was doing and we loved every second of Professor Hagrid. Thankfully, though, he found his groove back and ended up giving new and exciting lessons to the Hogwarts students. If I were studying at Hogwarts, I would take his class every day.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

“Great man, Dumbledore. ‘S long as we’ve got him, I’m not too worried.”

Dumbledore placed great trust in Hagrid. And, in return, he provided him with undying loyalty and unwavering admiration. One thing we love about Hagrid is his undying loyalty. Aside from Harry, he remained loyal to Dumbledore who has always given him a chance to prove himself. His loyalty always flares up whenever someone insults Dumbledore. Of course, this caused him to give Dudley a pig’s tail and choke Igor Karkaroff. He has always been a lovable giant whenever he results to violence, it was always to defend those he greatly admires.

“I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth botherin’ with.”

In Goblet of Fire’s 24th chapter, Rita Skeeter released an article in the Daily Prophet about Hagrid’s half-giant heritage. The article attached quotes from Draco and his friends about how dangerous Hagrid was. Then, Skeeter even added about how giants are bloodthirsty and brutal and were responsible for some of the worst mass Muggle killings of Voldemort’s reign. But, of course, countless parents and students love Hagrid. And, in fact, he was not ashamed about who or what he is. And, you know what? That quote is enough to live life by. Never be ashamed of who you are. Hagrid says so.

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix

“There’s a storm coming, Harry. We’d all best be ready when she does.”

Hagrid is very upbeat and has always been a positive character. He looks on the brighter side of life. However, that’s not always the case. When the franchise started to take a darker turn, he becomes more serious, especially after visiting the giants to try to convince them to join the right side. He quickly realized that there is trouble brewing. Despite that, he remains open and honest with Harry and didn’t need to sugarcoat the situation or even lie to him.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

“It’s… him… It’s… Aragog… I think he’s dyin’… He got ill over the summer an’ he’s not gettin’ better… I don’ know what I’ll do if he… if he… We’ve bin tergether so long…”

Just like we mentioned, Hagrid is very loyal. He raised Aragog from an egg as a Hogwarts student and kept him inside as a cupboard. When the Acromantula got sick, he continuously attempted to heal and comforted him. When Aragog eventually passed, he took the Acromantula’s corpse out of the colony before his children could attempt to cannibalize the corpse. Unfortunately, due to Acromantula’s death, his children no longer hold back to devour Hagrid. He loved Aragog, not just as a pet but as a friend. And, as fur parents, we can relate to Hagrid and his sentiment.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows | Warner Bros.

“My job’s ter get you there safe, Harry!”

In the Deathly Hallows, Harry was moved out of the Dursley home before his seventeenth birthday. To make it more safe, MadEye Moody made a batch of Polyjuice Potion with a strand of Harry’s hair.

This allowed Ron, Hermione, Fleur Delacour, Fred, and George Weasley, and Mundungus Fletcher to impersonate the Chosen One and act as decoys with an Order of Phoenix member protecting each of them. Hagrid was assigned to Harry’s and it was a full circle moment for the pair as he was the one who had brought the boy there when he was just an infant.

However, there was an ambush and the Death Eaters found out about the plan to move Harry earlier than rumored. Due to the ambush, Harry protested that they turn around and help out the other Harrys and their protectors. Hagrid responded with this quote and he loyally stood by it. He had always been there to make sure Harry was safe from any harm.

Despite Harry and other readers, expressing their sadness that the protagonist didn’t have a father figure. I considered Hagrid to be one ever since the first book or movie. I even thought that Harry should have named his second-born after the lovable half-giant. It could have been Rubeus instead of Albus Severus. Hagrid was always there for Harry. He was always proud of him, believed in him, and loved him. And, for that, we loved him even more.

Wands up for Robbie Coltrane! Thank you for giving life to our favorite loving giant, Hagrid. Thank you for everything. There truly is no Hogwarts without you.
