Reasons why you should try out Maximalism Fashion

Maximalism is basically a reaction against minimalism as it refers to an aesthetic of excess. The philosophy behind such a concept summarizes in the phrase ‘more is more.’ Of course, this contrasts with the minimalist motto of ‘less is more.’ Aside from that, it also refers to anything seen as excessive, overly complex, and showy, providing redundant overkill in features and attachments.

Maximalism rages on in 2022.

Although minimalistic fashion will forever remain effortlessly cool, it seems to have taken a backseat in a pandemic-stricken world. Maximalist fashion, on the other hand, had started to rage on in 2022. It just shows that in a post-pandemic world, the fashion industry has fought back and helped consumers transition back to normalcy. Of course, this includes embracing bold color and clashing prints with exaggerated silhouettes.

The relation of the COVID-19 pandemic to the appearance of maximalism fashion.

The appearance of maximalism fashion became apparent when 2020 and 2021 saw the propensity for loungewear, light layers, and more streamlined silhouettes. With 2022 seeing the comeback of normalcy, consumers look forward to having more occasions to dress up for. Although loungewear won’t go anywhere, the pandemic has truly given people the freedom to experiment with different styles and trends with maximalism fashion.

And, to be honest, I think I understand why. With the past few years filled with nothing but minimalism, I suddenly missed the color and texture of maximalist fashion trends. While I have always fallen in the middle of the spectrum between two aesthetics, I usually reach for simple pieces. But, recently, I’ve had this growing itch to take on bolder fashion choices. Thus, the interest in maximalism fashion.

Maximalism fashion in the Philippines.

Unfortunately, due to the Philippines being a tropical country, going for the maximalist aesthetic may be hard. However, Filipino personalities go for the said aesthetic during events, performances, and photoshoots.

AC Bonifacio wore a bright ensemble for her Fool No Mo! music video shoot.

She wore a neon yellow cut-out top and a similarly-hued pair of gloves. AC also had a neon green coat and a matching pair of trousers —  both of which remained decorated with green and blue strings. Then, she completed her fit with calf-length cow-patterned high-heeled boots.

Francis Diaz sports clashing patterns on a photoshoot with Candy magazine.

She wore a long-sleeved green and white patterned jumpsuit. Although it looked quite simple, she sported a wavy-patterned chiffon see-through dress over the jumpsuit.

Maris Racal had a semi-maximalist moment during her Myx Music Awards performance.

One of the things about maximalism fashion meant tying in colors with other pieces. She wore an orange top underneath a patchwork blazer and matching skirt. Then, she completed the ensemble with a pair of white heeled boots.

Jaz Reyes wore an ensemble of H&M’s collab with fashion icon Iris Apfel.

She sported the Jacquard-weave coat and skirt. She styled it in a similar way that the brand had endorsed it — with purple tights that tied in with the coordinates. The creative master, on the other hand, had a fitted mock-neck top underneath.

Vice Ganda wore the most elaborate outfits for the UnkabogaBALL2021.

One of the star’s looks includes a long-sleeved floor-length gown. It featured a hood that covered up their head and only showed their bedazzled eyes. The gown also had giant sequins and beads flowing from the gown.

Maximalism fashion looks effortlessly cool with campy patterns, layering, and daring silhouettes.

Although a lot of people think it looks messy, anyone can rock it perfectly. It expresses one’s individuality and emanates a certain wow factor. If you wish to know more about maximalism and how to style it, I recommend following Thea Castro-Vega on Instagram. Then, watch how she styles her clothing through her maximalist eyes.
