Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 1: The Lone Swordsman and Famous Detective
Story took off with much thrill from flashback and new mysteries with a windy and dark theme. All in greyscale, quite different from previous seasons to show us the origin of the detective agency and Oda Sakunosuke of Port Mafia.
Kaboom! Gripping as it is. What adds more to my excitement is knowing that two of my favorite characters, Yukichi Fukuzawa and Edogawa Ranpo are together in this whole episode. Thus, I am captured like it was my first time to see Bungo Stray Dogs. Despite the all-greyscale drama, it sets off a refreshing vibes.
What happened in Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 1?
Season 4 Episode 1 gives us the impression that the story will revolve around the origin of the Detective Agency and Port Mafia. The story kicks off with the past life of Fukuzawa, the president of the agency, and his happenstance with Ranpo. He decides on working alone as a bodyguard in securing peace in the city. To investigate murder, he went to the office where the crime scene was taken. He is conversing with the secretary who is busy checking loads of documents and told Fukuzawa that the high-skilled assassin, Oda, who “killed” the president was in the next room.
This is when Ranpo makes a superb entrance; delightful and energetic as a typical fourteen-year-old kid. He interrupts the banter of the secretary by asking where the permit is that he needs for his next job. Ranpo unashamingly interrupt and intrude them. Braced and sarcastic as Ranpo is, he disregards the clamor of the secretary not to move any of the papers lying inside the room and opens the window in a windy season to find his document.
Ranpo continues his blabbing and being talkative. Unconsciously, he spilled that the secretary is the murderer and assassin Oda didn’t know he was entrapped. Thus, when Oda had the chance, he flees and kills the secretary leaving his statement: “There is no forgiveness in this world, only revenge.”
BSD Season 4 Episode 1: The Lone Swordsman Fukuzawa and Famous Detective Ranpo
Fukuzawa is amused by Ranpo; thus, he invites him to eat and give his calling card to call him in case he’s in danger. This specific scene appears hilariously funny instead of pitying Ranpo from his story as an orphan and who’s jumping from one job to another. The very moment Fukuzawa gave his number he called him using the telephone of the restaurant where they were eating. He is unbothered yet he brings Ranpo along to his job as a bodyguard.
Consequently, they talked with a girl who called Fukuzawa to take care of the scene because they receive a threat that someone will be killed. As they interact with the members of the theatre, Fukuzawa realizes more about the skill of Ranpo. He noticed that Ranpo doesn’t understand that nobody knows anything he knows. As a genuine kid as he is, he thought that adults already know the truth but is only hiding it.
Questions I have in mind as I watched Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 1
Kudos to Ranpo’s talent. I expected nothing less from him. But this season serves us more. Ranpo is sarcastic, fun, honest, genuine, transparent, and talkative. As expected in the character portrayal of Fukuzawa, he is a leader thus he was built as decent and observant.
The questions I have in mind are, what happened in the past life of Fukuzawa that pushed him to work alone and leave security? And what is the whole story of Oda Sakunosuke aside from the back story presented in the previous season? Season 4 is a compelling introduction to the new season which leaves viewers intrigued about what’s coming.
The Lone Swordsman has changed his decision on working alone when he meets the Famous Detective. Stay tuned to Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4! Episode 2 will air on Jan. 11, 2023; Wednesday at 11 pm JST.
