Diana: Her Fashion Story,” a fashion exhibit conducted from 2017 to 2019, chronicled the evolution of Princess Diana’s style. It contained the clothing pieces worn by the Princess of Wales throughout her most iconic moments. Likewise, in 2021, the “Royal Style In The Making” exhibition at Kensington Palace displayed her legendary wedding dress. The creation of these fashion galleries reflects the enduring fashion legacy that the memorable princess has left behind.

Her fashion sense

The late Diana, Princess of Wales was born on the 1st of July 1961 in Norfolk, England. At the age of 20, she married the Prince of Wales at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Princess carried out a myriad of royal duties during her marriage, and such responsibilities came with the demand to always look presentable.

According to Anna Harvey, the princess’s trusted fashion guru, Diana was “very thoughtful” about how the public and media would interpret her clothing. Moreover, Eleri Lynn, curator of “Diana: Her Fashion Story” exhibition, told in an interview with Vanity Fair that Diana took fashion in a fun way. Lynn says, “she took risks . . . and experimented with her style. She was the first member of the royal family to be photographed wearing trousers to evening events. But she often teamed that with tuxedo jackets and bowties—that’s quite the bold, fun look that you don’t necessarily expect of a princess.”

Diana’s styles are so iconic that each outfit is thoroughly documented in the pages of history. Each outfit strikes as a moment, whether it’s the flamboyant bridal gown with a 25-foot train, the Travolta dress, the revenge dress, or anything in between. Although the standards for cleavage, short skirts, and bare legs were stricter in Diana’s era than today, she still managed to create a look that was uniquely hers
