Olivia Wilde is directing a female-centered Marvel film

American actress and filmmaker Olivia Wilde has been tapped to direct a female-centered Marvel film for Sony Pictures. In an article published on Deadline, the story is expected to be centered on Spider-Woman.

While Sony has yet to confirm this, Wilde herself tweeted an emoji of a spider.

Moreover, the film will reportedly be written by Katie Silberman, and produced by Amy Pascal. Rachel O’Connor will be the executive producer.

Spider-Woman is a superhero from the Marvel universe, whose origins began when Jessica Drew becomes ill due to uranium exposure in her father’s lab. To save her life, her father injects her with an experimental serum based on the spider’s blood.

The Spider-Woman character has actually been the alter ego of several characters in the Spider-Man timeline over the years including Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, and Jessica Drew, who was the first to sport the costume in the late 1970s. Since the concept is being completely revamped by Wilde, it’s unknown the direction the studio will go with her.

Wilde shot to fame with her role as Thirteen in the medical television series “House.” She is also known for her role as Quorra in “Tron: Legacy,” Suzy Miller in “Rush,” Rachel Salas in “In Time,” among many others.

Olivia Wilde’s next project as director will be a thriller called Don’t Worry Darling, starring Florence Pugh, Dakota Johnson, Shia LaBeouf, and Chris Pine.
