My experience as a news writer in a small media company

As aspiring media practitioners, one profession we are expected to land in the future is in the field of news and current affairs. As a Campus Journalist whose been training for as long as I can remember, being a news writer is one of my wildest dreams. It was quite a tough ride that I was given the opportunity to be one before I even graduate.

Writing is my first love. Through the years, I would catch myself exploring things and knowing myself more as a writer. To the point that I’ve got to make myself comfortable with writing materials that I never imagined I would engage with. Even for a short period of time, opportunities knocked on my door and I got to become a news writer in a small media company.

My experience as a news writer

From the application process, until I got promoted, training and the workflow itself left me in awe. Definitely, the young writer me would be so much proud for I’ve got to experience the workflow even in a small media company.

For three consecutive months, I’ve served as a news writer for ‘The Chronicle,’ a Manila-based news media company. The demand to work on a work-from-home setup made the job a little challenging for me. But, as they say, nothing could go tiring if you love what you do. This has been my mantra since I started as a news writer.

To give you a glimpse of how my experience as a news writer went through here are some of my personal experiences:

Overwhelming welcome

Literally, having been promoted as a news writer became very overwhelming for me. The moment that I was added to our Viber group chat and the workflows go on, I really got overwhelmed. I saw how the news production went through and it gave me a lot of confusion at first. But, as I train for several days, I’ve got to familiarize myself with the workflow.

The process

Basically, for my job as a news writer, I thought that the field I’d be engaging in would focus on writing only. But then, in my experience, I bet I was mistaken. For the process, I, as the writer will be assigned to gather the latest quotations for the senior editor’s provided personality. After that, I will get the gist of the quote and write a caption and article for it. Also, the latest news from the editor was released and I will be tasked to interpret the news from my own angle.

Cram. Cram. Then, Cram.

We are aware that current events should be shared with the public for their consumption the moment the situation happened. As the latest news arises from time to time it would cause so much pressure to be able to give my own angle on the news in an instant. I can’t help but cram most commonly into topics I am personally not invested with.

Perks of being updated with the latest news

As a Broadcasting student, I was expected to be updated on the latest happenings. But I honestly am not. This job that I acquired myself months ago made me updated on the latest events. From politics to economy, to showbiz and the like, and got to write about all of it.

Being alert is the key

Apart from writing, I also browse those huge news companies as they release the latest news. Afterward, I have permission to pitch it to our senior editor and write news about it. I also have to be alert to the happenings given that the aspect of news is really broad and anything can happen at any time.

Work with the practitioners

Another privilege I’ve acquired in this job is to work with people who have an established name in the industry. Working with them for three months made me feel like I was really part of the production. It opened a lot of doors for growth and I actually felt the improvement in my writing from the first day up until my last day in the company.

Open for criticisms… countless criticisms, I mean.

This job definitely made me realize that I have so much room left to grow. From the usage of words to jargon and to my wrong interpretations of some news. I received hurtful words during days of working and it actually made me doubt myself at first. I learned to take every criticism constructively and I left the company with so many learnings and satisfaction.

If you love your work, if you enjoy it, you’re already a success.

This quote brought me so much self-improvement. Certainly, nothing could go wrong if you are deeply in love with your craft.
