Non-verbal communication is more important than you’d think. Now that we’re facing screens and text instead of faces and voices, creating clear communication is made easier by emojis. A well-placed emoji in a message can change its entire meaning.

The problem with being an introvert

I would rather e-mail or message someone rather than call them. Calling someone on the phone brings out a lot of energy in me and takes up too much time. That’s why whenever I can, I opt to message people. However, there’s a catch.

When you are staring down a white box with blue speech bubbles, there’s a lot of room for interpretation. Because internet lingo has evolved the way it has, everything: from punctuation to spelling and grammar choices means something.

This is worse for someone like me who struggles with making friends. Now that everything is online, I found it hard to relay the emotion of what I was trying to say. How can I sum up everything in a tidy way? Well, the answer was right there on my keyboard – by using emojis.

Using emojis when messaging

Emojis make a message more intelligible because it assigns the tone of the message. You can appear friendlier and more personable when you use them. When a person reads aloud your message and sees which emoji you used, they could already infer what you’re trying to say. It takes out a lot of guesswork and keeps your messages brief and concise.

I generally use emojis during an informal setting like catching up with friends or doing group works with people I haven’t talked to yet. Lately, I have tried ending my messages with my boss with a smiling face emoji. Studies have generally shown conflicting results when it comes to using emojis in a professional setting.

So far, my boss and I are able to build rapport with each other and I do appreciate it when they reply with an emoji back. It reminds me that I’m not talking to a robot, but to another real person, even though we have never met in person.

Emojis are my lifesaving grace when talking to people online. And, honestly, I wish other people used them more too.
