Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art unveiled next year’s exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening of Fashion.” And no, it’s not the Met Gala 2024 Disney theme you might be envisioning.
The Internet has won again. Following the fashion fans’ cry for themes at the MET Gala, their voices have been heard. Last year, themes like American Fashion and Karl Lagerfeld were featured in the past exhibitions and MET Gala. Fans expressed disappointment, wanting to dedicate a theme for their favorite renowned designers—paying homage to their works and iconic archival pieces. And next year, it looks like the Costume Institute grants their wishes.
Spring 2024 exhibit’s theme explained
The exhibition will be featuring the Sleeping Beauties—alluding to the archival pieces of renowned couturier and many other canonical fashion visionaries. These pieces stand as glorious hallmarks of the designers’ work and fashion history. It spans over 400 years of history, from the works of Elsa Schiaparelli, Thierry Mugler, Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent to Lee Alexander McQueen. This also includes contemporary designers like Stella McCartney and Philip Lim. This exhibition pays tribute to these fashion heavy hitters. Additionally, some of these prized gems are too fragile to be worn. Which majority suggested–a dig on the controversial Kim K, slipping into Monroe’s historic birthday dress.
Furthermore, the long time curator of the Costume Institute’s exhibition Andrew Bolton alongside Wendy Yu, told Vogue how thrilled they are for next year’s exhibition and the Met Gala 2024. They aim to revive the beauty and the emotion of the ensembles with the aid of cutting-edge technology specifically, video animation, CGI and AI. Bolton has long believed in fashion being imbued with emotions. This is what they aspire to bring forth to the present center stage of fashion. Evoking one’s feelings through sensorial appreciation of these historically significant and aesthetically sublime dresses. This exhibition also circulates around 50 pieces, drawn from 250 items of the Costume Institute’s permanent collection.
Met Gala 2024
For this year, it became clear what looks to expect on the red carpet. A marriage between historic pieces melded with contemporary flair will be in full display. TikTok and Loewe will be sponsoring the MET Gala night, happening on May 6, 2024. Although MET Gala organizers have yet to announce full details including the dress code, hosts and guest performers. Will Rihanna be reclaiming her reign as the MET Gala fashion supreme? Or Zendaya will continue to up the ante on her style chemistry with Law Roach, who’s notorious to pull archives or dare we say, the Sleeping Beauties.
Aside from Kim K’s controversial archive pull, keeping an eye on Rih’ and Zendaya will surely intrigue at the Gala. Moreover, up and coming designers must be revving up their engine to showcase peak craftsmanship of their atelier with this theme that will surely embody their cognizance and interpretation of the hallmarks of the history of fashion.
