“Ivo Live, Encantadia!”: Three Generations of Magical Storytelling

Encantadia

Fire. Air. Water. Earth.

Which of these elements would you dare to command? Surely, at least once in our lives, we’ve all dreamed of wielding their power—bending nature to our will and becoming the hero who could save the world. And just when we grew up, reality reminded us that such magic only existed in dreams.

However, in Encantadia, nothing is impossible—it’s a realm where the unimaginable comes to life.

Encantadia is a Filipino fantasy-drama franchise produced by GMA Network, which has aired multiple series that mirror Filipino fantasy storytelling prowess. Each series offers distinct plots and visuals that portray love, sisterhood, patriotism, and the unending battle between good and evil.

On May 2, 2005, Encantadia premiered on GMA Network’s primetime block. It starred Iza Calzado as Amihan, Sunshine Dizon as Pirena, Karylle Padilla as Alena, and Diana Zubiri as Danaya. The series quickly rose to fame, sparking a wave of spin-offs and merchandise creations.

Even though two decades have passed, the show consistently inspires audiences, especially women and the LGBTQIA+ community. On Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Karylle reflected on its cultural influence. She noted how fans often tell her it was a part of their childhood, happiness, and sense of empowerment.

Encantadia tells the story of four Sang’gres—Pirena, Amihan, Alena, and Danaya—guardians of powerful gemstones that preserve peace in their mystical realm. Conflict arises when Hagorn, the King of Hathoria, manipulates Pirena and sets his plan to conquer Encantadia into motion.

The series was swiftly followed by two sequels: Etheria and Encantadia: Pag-ibig Hanggang sa Wakas. For a 2005 TV series, Encantadia delivered exceptional costumes, set designs, and visual effects. This solidifies its status as a pop culture phenomenon that elevated the standards of Philippine television.

Over a decade had passed when the magic of Encantadia was reimagined. On July 18, 2016, GMA Network aired the first episode of Encantadia 2016. This is a reboot of the groundbreaking 2005 fantasy series of the same name.

Introducing a new set of cast members who once again brought to life the characters of the four powerful Sang’gres. This time, Glaiza De Castro played Pirena, Kylie Padilla portrayed Amihan, Gabbi Garcia embodied Alena, and Sanya Lopez took on the role of Danaya.

Apart from featuring a new roster of actors, the show incorporated unique storylines that offered viewers a fresh and enchanting adventure. One thing that also stood out for Encantadiks (the name for the show’s avid fans) was the enhanced special effects, which earned the series the Best Visual Effects/CGI (Long Form Category) award at the 2017 Apollo Awards.

Once again, Encantadia proved its enduring influence through its strong TV ratings and the millions of views it garnered for each episode on YouTube.
