Lin-Manuel Miranda: Man Behind Top Musical and Theater Songs

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s name is all over the theater and music industry. He is an award-winning songwriter, actor, director, and producer. He is the creator of the top Broadway Tony-winning musicals, In the Heights and Hamilton: the Musical. Those two musicals also have a book written, of course, by one and only, Lin-Manuel.

He won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama and earned a record-breaking 16 Tony Nominations, winning 11 Tony Awards, including two personally for Lin-Manuel. The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hamilton won the 2016 Best Musical Theater Album Grammy. Mr. Miranda and Hamilton won the 2016 Drama League Awards for Distinguished Performance and Outstanding Production of a Musical, respectively.

Why admire Lin-Manuel’s works?

Because he includes immigrants and people descended from enslaved people, black people, Latinos, Asians, and low-income children with little hope for the future, in the Room where everything happens, I respect that.

The ambitious individual who is left out of the “smoke-filled room” becomes a symbol for entire groups who are denied power. In his song lyrics’ Room Where it Happens,’ “We want our leaders to save the day – / But we don’t get a say in what they trade away / We dream of a brand new start – / But we dream in the dark for the most part.” The song describes the whole musical, which constantly raises issues of historiography and the power to shape a national narrative.

Lin-Manuel has so many pieces that I wish to list one-by-one. He has many works from audiobooks, books, film, music, television, and the theater. But here’s the summary of his results on theater and music from his website.
