Disney-Pixar’s Elemental reminds fans of Fireboy and Watergirl
Elemental is an upcoming Disney-Pixar animated film, slated to have its release on June 2023. The synopsis revolves around a city where fire, water, land, and air residents live together. The film features Ember and Wade with Leah Lewis and Mamoudiu Athie’s voices as Ember and Wade respectively. A fiery young woman named Ember and a go-with-the-flow guy named Wade discover something about elementals. And, how much they actually have in common.
Elemental gets its inspiration from Director Peter Sohn’s childhood in New York.
During the announcement, he introduced the film in a description. Elemental aims to explore themes of diversity through the various elements living in the same city. Of course, as Disney and Pixar partner together, the film features beautiful and colorful visuals as the animators work to bring the vibrant city to life.
“The idea started with my parents. As immigrants to the U.S. from Korea in the ’70s, they had no family, nothing. But they managed to create a life here in New York. And, just like them, many people have left their people and families to a new land, with hopes and dreams, all mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages, and neighborhoods.”
However, there are fans who point out the similarities between Elemental and Oslo Albet’s series of games called Fireboy and Watergirl.
Although the genders were flipped, fans were quick to see the similarities. Fireboy and Watergirl was the first of the cooperative puzzle platformers which came out in 2009. It was a classic Flash game, playable on Coolmath Games. And, to be honest, seeing the graphics on Elemental, it feels as if I have traveled back in time.
Fireboy and Watergirl 1: Forest Temple features the classic Flash game vibes. Fireboy can only travel through or activate red-colored items. Meanwhile, the opposite holds true for Watergirl. She can travel through or activate blue-colored items. In a tweet, Coolmath Games even pointed out something.

Nicholas Fretterd even replied to Coolmath Games’ tweet, editing the poster. He also flipped Fireboy and Watergirl as Waterboy and Fireboy to match Elemental and its storyline.

Of course, the idea of elemental characters isn’t new.
It also seems reminiscent of The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Sharkboy represents Wade while Lavagirl seems to have similarities with Ember. Aside from that, Avatar: The Last Airbender also has elementals trying to live peacefully in one area. Aang is the last Airbender. Meanwhile, Katara serves as a Waterbending master. Toph, on the other hand, is a master of Earthbending. And, lastly, Zuko has Firebending abilities. However, Elemental also includes the literal representations of those elements.
