Zodiac Signs: What you need to know about your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs

During the pandemic, most Gen Z finds astrology interesting and it somehow becomes a trend. People are finding their “big three” signs: Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs.

It may help to understand and know yourself better. Zodiac signs vary depending on your birthdate. Every sign has its own characteristics. But sometimes, do you feel like you do not really relate to your sign? This is because you only know what your sun sign is, not your whole natal chart.

What you refer to as your sign is just a part of a large complex chart known as a natal chart or birth chart. Talking about the whole natal chart is a really complicated thing to explain but to start, you need to know your “big three” signs: Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.

For these three signs or your whole birth chart, you need to know the exact date, place, and time of your birth.

Your Sun Sign

When you tell someone what your zodiac sign is, you are actually telling them your Sun sign. The Sun sign is based on your birthdate. Knowing your Sun sign helps you understand your core identity, your life path, and your true personality.

Here is a list of usual dates the Sun is in each sign:

  • Aries (March 21 – April 19)
  • Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
  • Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
  • Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
  • Leo (July 23 – August 22)
  • Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
  • Libra (September 23 – October 22)
  • Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
  • Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
  • Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
  • Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
  • Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

In our solar system, the Sun is the brightest, the center, and its gravity holds the solar system together. Thus, your Sun sign also speaks to confidence, sense of self, and who you are evolving to become. Most people who believe in astrology also believe that as you age, your connection to your Sun sign gets stronger.

Your Moon Sign

If you do not relate to your Sun sign, maybe because your connection with your moon sign is stronger. The Moon sign is linked to your emotions, feelings, your subconscious self, and inner shadows.

While the Sun is the brightest and reflects your confidence, the Moon guides you in the darkness of night thus the Moon sign acts as your emotional guide. The Moon sign represents how you react and how you feel as a response to a situation. However, how you communicate and show these reactions and feelings sometimes depends on your Sun and Rising sign.

Your Rising Sign or Ascendant

Do you ever encounter people saying they thought you were another sign? If your Sun sign is your core identity and your Moon sign reflects your inner feelings, your Rising sign is your “mask” to the world, your external self. Additionally, the Rising sign or also called Ascendant is how you portray yourself to others. This is the image you present to the people around you. It is the first impression you give.

For instance, your Sun sign may be a charming and friendly Libra, but you may seem mysterious and secretive to strangers if you have a Scorpio as your ascendant.

If you want to know what your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs are (or your whole natal chart,) you may want to find your birth certificate and use an online birth chart calculator.
