Tesda plans to turn Garbage collectors into Professionals

Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) will soon open its first training center for garbage collection in Teresa Town, Rizal.

The garbage man or basurero that we all know, will now have professional skills needed in their working environment.

It’s been a month since Tesda provincial office in Rizal inaugurated the first training center. The program is with partnership with the local government of Teresa Town.

According to the agency, this will part of Tesda’s thrust in order to improve the sills of our garbage collectors. At the same time, it is a response to the impact of climate change.

Tesda Director General Suharto Mangudadatu states that the agency aims to professionalize trash collection by turning it into an occupation.

“Garbage collectors have to deal with our daily trash. In this thankless yet very important job, they make sure waste gets removed from our homes and is moved to the landfills,” he said

The proper training that the garbage collector will gain, they will how to safety handle and dispose of waste. Most importantly, is that it can positively impact for the environment and for Mother Earth.

About the Garbage Collection Training

The agency targets to start in the fourth quarter of this year. They will require 104 training hours. It will focus on learning about sorting and removing unnecessary items, arrangement. Also, they will be implementing mitigation measures to ease environmental risks in their working environment.

Aside from that, the training will also cover learning the proper maintenance of work tools, equipment, and areas. They will learn to proper use of gloves, masks, safety shoes, safety goggles, reflectorized vests and raincoats.

According to Tesda Rizal director Maria Roque, the Tesda Learning Center and Material Recovery Facility was able to provide required tools, materials and equipment for the garbage collection training.

“Aside from that, there are additional equipment like paper and charcoal maker, coconut weaving equipment, bio-reactor and coconut weaving,” she said.

The pioneer batch of trainees that was composed of trash collectors from Teresa will be financially supported by the municipal government.
