TECH/REVIEW | What it’s really like to use the iPhone 18 Pro

Spending a full week with the iPhone 18 Pro let us move past the initial excitement and focus on which features actually make a difference. Coming from a base model iPhone, let’s just say this experience became thought-provoking at the very least.
While these changes may seem minor compared to its predecessor, they become more noticeable the longer you use it, especially in the cameras. In this edition of VP Tech, we took the iPhone 18 Pro out for a spin, including a shoot at Bahay Modernismo in Quezon City, to see how these updates hold up beyond the spec sheet.
Build

Apple hasn’t abandoned the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max’s recognizable identity, but the iPhone 18 Pro makes a few thoughtful changes that matter beyond aesthetics.

Its aluminum unibody gives the device a trusty foundation, while the Ceramic Shield 2 front adds another layer of protection. Apple actually says the front offers three times better scratch resistance than the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s the kind of improvement that matters most when your phone spends most of its life in your pocket, bag, or hand.

Battery life is another upgrade that becomes easier to appreciate with time. New battery designs and silicon efficiencies help the iPhone 18 Pro deliver up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models. When you’re running low, wired charging can bring the battery to around 50 percent in approximately 15 minutes, while wireless charging reaches the same level in about 30 minutes.
For anyone juggling errands, yes, including late-night gaming and scrolling, having more battery is a practical advantage. It’s not the flashiest feature on the spec sheet, but it’s one you’re likely to appreciate, especially if you’re upgrading from an older iPhone model.
Display

The iPhone 18 Pro’s display changes are easy to overlook at first, which is arguably part of the point.
Apple has moved the infrared camera used for Face ID beneath the display, using a small area with half the usual pixel density to let infrared light pass through; you’ll be able to get a slight glimpse of it under direct sunlight. This allows the Dynamic Island to shrink by around 25 percent, leaving more room for the content you actually want to see in its full 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display glory.

Coming from a non-pro iPhone, however, the more noticeable difference is the 120Hz ProMotion display. The scrolling experience honestly made the phone harder to put down. Even casual scrolling feels more responsive, making animations, videos, and social media browsing way smoother.

Camera

If there’s one part of the iPhone 18 Pro worth spending extra time exploring, it’s the camera system. We doubt the everyday person could fully maximize the cameras on the iPhone 18 Pro, but having this flexibility can change how you approach everyday moments without you really even knowing it.
The phone’s three 48MP Fusion cameras, such as the main camera with variable aperture, an ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto camera, offer different ways to frame a scene. During our visit to Bahay Modernismo in Quezon City, the museum’s varied lighting, architectural details, and textures gave us a chance to experiment with those options beyond the usual portraits and food shots.

The variable aperture on the Main camera is particularly interesting. The system automatically adjusts the aperture to suit different conditions, giving you a more brain-off shooting experience when you just want to capture a moment. That convenience is useful when you’re out with friends or exploring somewhere new and don’t want to miss a shot while fiddling with settings.

For those who prefer more control, the new Pro controls let you adjust white balance, check a histogram, change shutter speed to introduce motion blur, and manually control aperture. Just check out these shots we took at Bahay Modernismo, for example.
Photographic Styles 3 adds another layer of personalization with new controls for texture and grain. You can smooth skin details for a more polished portrait or emphasize texture to bring out the interplay between light and shadow. We found this “recipe” online and tried playing with it giving out photos a more film-like touch.

What the iPhone 18 Pro offers is more room to experiment, whether you prefer quick snapshots or images that reflect a more deliberate creative style.
Performance

The A20 Pro chip might not be the first thing you notice during everyday use, but it helps support many of the features that make the phone feel capable.
Apple describes it as its most powerful and efficient iPhone chip design yet, with packaging inspired by its M-series chips. Paired with a next-generation vapor chamber, Apple says it delivers graphics performance up to 40 percent faster than the iPhone 17 Pro.
The thermal system deserves a closer look, too. Apple’s custom chip packaging, next-generation vapor chamber, and nano-twin copper display plate work together to dissipate heat during demanding tasks.
We got a better feel for this during a whole-day pickleball tournament, where the iPhone 18 Pro went through its fair share of action. Between taking photos, recording videos, and posting updates on social media, the phone kept up with the demands of the day without breaking a sweat.
Overall thoughts

After a week, the iPhone 18 Pro feels less like a collection of headline features and more like a series of refinements to an already familiar experience. The improved battery capabilities offer practical benefits, the smaller Dynamic Island makes better use of the display, and the A20 Pro chip brings more performance headroom. Us for one, appreciated documenting life more with the iPhone 18 Pro.
Not every upgrade will feel equally significant to every user. If your current iPhone still handles your daily routine comfortably, these changes may not immediately convince you to upgrade. But if you’re coming from an older model, the combined improvements could make the switch more worthwhile.
The first week is often when a new phone feels the most exciting. It’s also when you begin figuring out which features you’ll actually keep using after the novelty wears off.
