Hypertension notifications available today on Apple Watch

Apple Watch Hypertension Notifications Now Available in the Philippines

Apple has made hypertension notifications available on Apple Watch in the Philippines starting today, allowing users to receive alerts when the device detects consistent signs of hypertension, or chronic high blood pressure.

Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease, affecting approximately 1.4 billion adults worldwide. Despite its prevalence, the condition often goes undiagnosed because it typically has no noticeable symptoms. Many people also do not visit their doctors regularly, while a single blood pressure reading during a clinical visit may not be enough to identify the condition.

Apple Watch hypertension notifications aim to help address this gap by using data from the device’s optical heart sensor to analyze how blood vessels respond to each heartbeat. The feature runs passively in the background, reviewing data over 30-day periods and notifying users when it identifies consistent signs of hypertension.

By providing these insights through a device users already wear, Apple hopes to help people recognize potential warning signs earlier and take action, whether through lifestyle changes or medical treatment, to reduce their risk of serious long-term health complications.

Backed by Scientific Research

Like Apple’s other health features, hypertension notifications used scientific research and clinical validation in development stage. The underlying algorithm uses advanced machine learning trained on data from multiple studies involving more than 100,000 participants. Its performance, subsequently evaluated in a clinical study involving over 2,000 participants.

While the feature not designed to detect every case of hypertension, Apple says the widespread use of Apple Watch could help more people become aware of this often-overlooked condition.

Users who receive a hypertension notification are advised to measure and record their blood pressure using a third-party blood pressure cuff for seven days. They should then share their readings with their healthcare provider at their next appointment. This approach is consistent with the American Heart Association’s guidance on diagnosing and managing hypertension.

Compatible Apple Watch Models

Hypertension notifications are currently available on the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch Ultra 3.

The feature will not initially be available in the Philippines on the Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4, as additional regulatory clearances for these models are still in progress. Apple expects availability on these devices to begin next year.
