It’s a happy Pride month indeed! After years of speculations, Nickelodeon finally shed light on the real sexuality of the iconic animated character kids and kids-at-heart love, SpongeBob Squarepants.
As many have suspected, he who lives in a pineapple under the sea is indeed gay. This was confirmed via a Nickelodeon tweet paying tribute to Pride month with photos of three of their canon characters as a clear indicator that they’re all part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Aside from SpongeBob, the post included Schwoz Schwartz from ‘Henry Danger,’ and Korra from the ‘Avatar’ spin-off show ‘Legend of Korra.’
In the caption they wrote, “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month.”
Fans were delighted by the announcement but admitted they were not surprised much. Prior to this, it was earlier identified as asexual, according to Nickelodeon AND the series creator Stephen Hillenburg in the early 2000s. Maybe he had a change of heart?
Likewise, Korra being gay/bisexual wasn’t much of a shock too for the fans. Her gender was revealed in the show itself and actually written into the script. Then, Schwoz, the actor who plays him — Michael D. Cohen, transitioned as a transgender man in real life.
Nevertheless, we all love happy surprises like this especially in a trying situation. Whatever sexuality, let’s all unite in love for each other!
