Filipino shows nominated at New York Festivals 2020
Indeed, the talents of our Filipino filmmakers are up for a worldwide competition. A total of 17 Filipino TV shows have been nominated at this year’s New York Festivals TV & Film Awards.
Check out the shows that entered the film festival below:
GMA
Nine TV shows including documentaries from GMA Network earned nominations with eight coming from its news and public affairs program.
Stand for Truth earned its first ever awards nomination in the Coverage of Continuing News Story for its reportage on the Hong Kong protests. Hosted by Autom Araullo, it is the first ever program in local TV to have a mobile journalism concept. Stand for Truth also airs in GMA News TV and on Youtube.
Aside from that, it seems like Araullo will be more proud as his GMA-7 Sunday afternoon documentary, The Atom Araullo Specials, also nabbed two nominations. In fact, two episodes from the show bagged nominations: Babies4Sale.PH entered the Best Investigative Report category for investigating the alarming baby transactions prevalent in social media; while The Patient Is Out is nominated in the Human Concerns category.
State of the Nation (SONA) by Jessica Soho in GMA News TV also earned a nomination for the Best Newscast category for its coverage on the Luzon earthquake that happened in April 2019.
GMA Network’s environmental program, Born To Be Wild, also nabbed nominations in the Climate Change & Sustainability Category for its “Big Catch” feature. GMA News TV’s news magazine program Brigada received nomination in the History & Society category for its “Aeta Squadron/Female Spies” episode.
Furthermore, GMA News TV’s Investigative Documentaries is nominated in the Social Issue category for its “Tulaylay” feature, while GMA-7’s Reporter’s Notebook has been shortlisted for “Project Pilipinas: Medical Facility” episode. In fact, Reporter’s Notebook is now an eight time medalist at the New York Festival.
Meanwhile, GMA Program Support Department’s TV spot for Bonifacio Day also received nomination for Best Graphic Design under the Promotion/Open and IDs category.
ABS-CBN
On the other hand, also joining the nominations for the New York Festival are some shows by ABS-CBN. Four of these are documentaries which include Alab (Ablaze) for the Heroes category. It tackles about volunteer firefighters who responds to emergencies during March, the Philippines’ fire prevention month.
Ang Babae ng Balangiga (The Woman of Balangiga) has entered the History and Society category. It tells the story of Visayan heroine Casiana Nacionales, in connection to the return of the Balangiga bells in San Lorenzo de Martir town in December 15, 2018.
For HIV awareness, of course, ABS-CBN didn’t prevail. Documentary HIV Rising has also received nomination for an in-depth look on the cases of HIV/AIDS infections in the Philippines. Also joining GMA in the Human Concerns category is Invisible. It provides a more positive approach on mental health.
Furthermore, DocuCentral’s documentary series, Local Legends, also earned two nominations for its two episodes; “Glass Sculptor”in the Arts Category and “Environmental Artist” for the Heroes category.
Jeff Canoy’s #NoFilter: Tao Po episode also grabbed nomination in the Human Concerns category, while Red Alert‘s feature on measles made it to the Health/Medical Information category.
Meanwhile, the 2020 New York Festivals TV & Film Awards gala will take place on April 21, 2020 in Las Vegas.
